Kolhapur

Definition and stakes

Various,  Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th Edition…

“ The estimated revenue is £300,000. Kolhapur stretches from the heart of the Western Ghats eastwards into the plain of the Deccan. Along the spurs of the main chain of the Ghats lie wild and picturesque hill slopes and valleys, producing little but timber, and till recently covered with rich forests. The centre of the state is crossed by several lines of low hills running at right angles from the main range. In the east the country becomes more open and presents the unpicturesque uniformity of a well-cultivated and treeless plain, broken only by an occasional river. ”

Sir Valentine Chirol,  Indian Unrest

“ Kolhapur is the most important of the Native States under the charge of the Bombay Government, and its ruler is the only ruling Mahratta chief who can claim direct descent from the great Shivaji, the "Shivaji-Maharaj" whose cult Tilak made one of the central features of his political propaganda. He is the "Chhatrapati Maharajah," and is acknowledged to be as such the head of the Mahratta Princes of India. One would have thought that such a lineage would have sufficed in itself to invest the Maharajah of Kolhapur with a certain measure of sanctity in the eyes of Tilak and his followers. ”

D. V. Athalye,  The Life of Lokamanya Tilak (1921)

“ Tilak in consultation with Tai Maharaj and other trustees made frequent enquiries and numerous efforts towards the securing of a suitable boy for adoption. The circle of relations was considerable, but a suitable adoptee could not be found in the Kolhapur or Poona branches of the family of the deceased. As we now know some secret efforts were, about this time, being made to induce Tai Maharaj to adopt Bala Maharaj, brother of Pandit Maharaj of Kolhapur. ”
