John Lomax climbed ladders that moved on metal tracks, and found bulging brown paper envelopes, while Wyatt sat down to relight his pipe and blow smoke into the already thick air. ”

“You and Mr. Lomax, not to mention the Loyalist party of Herzoslovakia. If you’ll pardon the expression, sir, you’re in the soup.”
“Really, Battle,” interposed George, shocked to the core.
“Go on, Battle,” said Isaacstein. “In the soup describes the situation very accurately. You’re an intelligent man.”
“You’ve got to have a King. You’ve lost your King—like that!” He snapped his large fingers. “You’ve got to find another in a hurry, and that’s not an easy job. ”

“ The nice part of it was that it wouldn't be sudden—we'd have days to get closer and closer to death; and days for each one to realize a little more that every man who wasn't breathing would make it that much easier for the rest of us. I caught myself thinking of it when I saw Bullard or Grundy.
Then trouble struck again. I was late getting to the scene this time, down by the engine room. Muller and Bill Sanderson were ahead of me, trying to separate Hal Lomax and Grundy, and not doing so well. Lomax brought up a haymaker as I arrived, and started to shout something. ”

“Big-time stuff, I should judge.” Lomax scratched his bald spot. “He's been up to Lockwood's, pulling some kind of telepathy flubbydub, and using an African witch doctor's skull to give him a line on the long lost daughter. Hot dog, eh?”
Wyatt laughed.
“You don't mean the old boy would fall for any such—”
“Don't I, though? He'll eat it alive! If you were half the writer you think you are, you'd know that half the world's crooked and the other half foolish. Lockwood's in the foolish class. ”

“ When it was discovered that the enemy was retiring, I moved forward at once and arrived at New-Market with my infantry on the 7th. Rosser pushed forward on the Back and Middle Roads in pursuit of the enemy's cavalry, which was engaged in burning houses, mills, barns and stacks of wheat and hay, and had several skirmishes with it, while Lomax also moved forward on the Valley Pike and the roads east of it. ”

“ LADY BRITOMART. Really, Barbara, you go on as if religion were a pleasant subject. Do have some sense of propriety.
UNDERSHAFT. I do not find it an unpleasant subject, my dear. It is the only one that capable people really care for.
LADY BRITOMART [looking at her watch] Well, if you are determined to have it, I insist on having it in a proper and respectable way. Charles: ring for prayers. [General amazement. Stephen rises in dismay] .
LOMAX [rising] Oh I say!
UNDERSHAFT [rising] I am afraid I must be going.
LADY BRITOMART. You cannot go now, Andrew: it would be most improper. Sit down. ”

“ Upon my honour, yes!"
"You deny that you ran off with Ruby Raymond from her father's house, at twelve o'clock on the night of Christmas Eve?"
"I do."
"You lie in your false throat, man!" shouted the farmer, and at his words Schuyler Cluett sprang toward him; but quick as a flash, a pistol met him, the muzzle in his face, while the young farmer said sternly:
"Back! I did not come here unprepared, and I would kill you, oh! how gladly!"
"I tell you I am falsely accused; and being unarmed, and knowing your great strength, I am forced to hear you accuse me and submit to your insults, Kent Lomax." ”

“ For a young man looking for trouble, he could hardly have done better.
“South America,” thought Anthony to himself, “simply isn’t in it with this!”
He had already decided upon his course of action. He was going to tell the truth—with one trifling alteration, and one grave suppression.
“The story begins,” said Anthony, “about three weeks ago—in Bulawayo. Mr. Lomax, of course, knows where that is—outpost of the Empire—‘What do we know of England who only England know?’ all that sort of thing. ”

“ Ill bet you a feed at Thompson's Spa that Veazie's got the daughter planted there already.”
“That's right—he might have. Great stuff! Looks to me as if I'd better dig out and hunt the chauffeur, pretty P. D. Q.”
“Intelligent young man!” gibed Lomax. “You've got a right hunch, for once in your pure life. Lockwood and the prof are going to chercher la femme. It's up to you to chercher le chauffeur, and do it now! Here's your hat. What's your hurry?”
Inside of an hour Wyatt had located the garage where Lockwood kept his limousine. ”

“ Not the stuck-up cads who live in the big houses by night and sneak up to London to sell boots and beer and underclothing by day; not the purse-proud rubbish that sticks 'Esquire' after its name without any right; but genuine people, who live over their shops in Chislehurst, and sell boots and beer and underclothing openly, and don't mind admitting it. Mr. Lomax, our butcher, is proposing me, and Rogers, the landlord of the Eight Bells Inn, has seconded my nomination. I'm going to write an address to the electors, and leave no stone unturned to get in. ”

“ He is a most implacable, determined, tenacious, intolerant person who by mere force of character presents himself as—and indeed actually is—considerate, gentle, explanatory, even mild and apologetic, capable possibly of murder, but not of cruelty or coarseness. By the operation of some instinct which is not merciful enough to blind him with the illusions of love, he is obstinately bent on marrying Barbara. Lomax likes Sarah and thinks it will be rather a lark to marry her. Consequently he has not attempted to resist Lady Britomart's arrangements to that end. ”

“ Schuyler Cluett went to his room that night, pondering over all he had heard, and at last he said half aloud:
"That beautiful girl marry that common fellow? Never! she shall be mine, and I swear it!"
And Schuyler Cluett kept his treacherous oath against the man who had saved his life, for the very eve of her wedding-day with Kent [Pg 7] Lomax, Ruby Raymond stole out of her pleasant room, unlocked the front door, and glided across the lawn to the foot of the hill, where in a buggy, with a pair of spirited horses, sat a young man awaiting her. ”
