Pinturicchio

Definition and stakes

Olave M. Potter,  A Little Pilgrimage in Italy

“ And truly Pinturicchio has lavished colour on this splendid monument to the glories of the Humanist Pope, who was a typical expression of his age in everything, except in his great revival of the Middle Ages, when he tried to lead a crusade against the Turks. The room is full of sunlight and the sheen of gold and precious stones, and Pinturicchio seems to have caught the world in its morning, with gay youths and maidens walking on the flower-starred grass, and swift wild-geese high on the wing through the clear blue heavens. ”

Giorgio Vasari,  Lives of the Most Eminent Painters Sculptors and Architects…

“ At Monte Oliveto in Naples, in the Chapel of Paolo Tolosa, there is a panel with an Assumption by the hand of Pinturicchio. This master made an infinite number of other works throughout all Italy, which, since they are of no great excellence, and wrought in a superficial manner, I will pass over in silence. Pinturicchio used to say that a painter could only give the greatest relief to his figures when he had it in himself, without owing anything to principles or to others. He also made works in Perugia, but these were few. ”

James Ward,  Fresco Painting

“ THE WORK OF PINTURICCHIO AND GHIRLANDAJO
Bernardino Pinturicchio of Perugia (1454-1513) was an excellent painter in fresco, although Vasari, in his Lives of the Painters, has done scant justice to his great merits. In the face of much splendid work that has been done by Pinturicchio, the want of appreciation of his merits by Vasari is quite inexplicable.
