Definition and stakes

Portrait of Carl Schurz Carl Schurz Speeches, correspondence and political papers of Carl Schurz (1913)

It consisted in the fact that the first President of this Republic furnished in himself, by his character, the principles he followed, the motives that inspired him and the wisdom of his policies, the most perfect model of a republican chief magistrate in the history of the world—a President to whose teachings and example all his successors—indeed, all those wielding public power in this Republic—could with the utmost confidence look for safest guidance.
