Tibetan Tales, Derived from Indian Sources

“ The Rishi replied, “O great king, it is not your power which has brought this about, nor yet that of your wives, princes, ministers, warriors, towns-people, or country-folk. But there are four living creatures in your realm whose power has done so.” The king said, “If this be so, I will go to see them.” The Rishi said, “Wherefore do you wish to see them? Rather adopt the course of life which they have adopted, and live according to it.” ”

“ On Monday the 24th of the last month, which happened to be the Rishi Panchami day, passed away from his field of labour one who was rightly looked upon as a modern Rishi. Like the rishis of old Sir Ramkrishna Bhandarkar utilised his unequalled talents for the spread of education in its widest sense. Like the rishis he lived a life of purity, love and justice—a life that hankered after nothing so much as the love and knowledge of the Author of this Universe. ”

The Mahabharata/Book 1: Adi Parva…

“ Upon this, their suspicion fell upon the Muni, and accordingly they seized him with the thieves and brought him before the king. The king sentenced him to be executed along with his supposed associates. And the officers, acting in ignorance, carried out the sentence by impaling the celebrated Rishi. And having impaled him, they went to the king with the booty they had recovered. But the virtuous Rishi, though impaled and kept without food, remained in that state for a long time without dying. And the Rishi by his ascetic power not only preserved his life but summoned other Rishi to the scene. ”
