Sanballat

Definition and stakes

Adam Clarke,  Commentary and critical notes on the Bible… (1800s)

“ Verse 11
Should such a man as I flee? - Shall I, who am governor of the people, appointed both by God and the king, shall I betray my trust, and leave the flock without a shepherd? Shall I be a traitor, and abandon the office to which I am appointed? - No! Who, in my situation, with such responsibility, and such prospects, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not: I will stand at my post, and be ready to receive my enemies whensoever they come; so let Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem look to themselves.

“ Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, insidiously desire a conference with Nehemiah, which he refuses, [58] . They then charge him with the design of rebelling, and causing himself to be made king, [59] ; which he denies, and prays to God for support, [60] , [61] . A false prophet is hired by Tobiah and Sanballat, to put him in fear; he discovers the imposture, and defeats their design, [62] . He prays to God against them, [63] . The wall is finished in fifty-two days, [64] . He discovers a secret and treasonable correspondence between Tobiah and some of the Jewish nobles, [65] . ”

Anonymous,  The Bible, King James version, Book 16…

“ So they strengthened their
hands for this good work.
16:002:019 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the
Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to
scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye
do? will ye rebel against the king?
16:002:020 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven,
he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and
build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in
Jerusalem.
