“ In the cathedral of Speyer stand the statues of the mighty German Kaisers, who six hundred years ago wore the purple, and, after their wild battle with the elements of disorder about them, were buried at last in its crypts. They are majestic figures for the most part, idealised by the sculptor, and yet probably not far beyond nature; for the imperial dignity was not hereditary, but given to the man chosen for it, and the choice was often a worthy one. They were leaders in character as well as station, and it is right to give their images the bearing of men strong in war and council. ”

“ Any person who however might have entered Speyer cathedral at the hour of Vespers on the day on which Lydia was rescued, might have seen a young man clothed in black kneeling in the most abject manner before one of the confessional boxes most concealed in the gloom. His confession was at an end and the priest was earnestly addressing him. Feeling very diplomatic, she lamented the fate of Speyer, and declared that never, never should she be so misguided as to visit it, and added of her own accord that the principles of restoration were ill understood in Germany. "The Germans," she said, "are too thorough, and this is all very well sometimes, but at other times it does not do."
"Exactly," said Margaret; "Germans are too thorough." And her eyes began to shine. ”

“ In 1839 he settled in Zweibrücken, and remained there until 1856, when he was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of the kingdom of Bavaria at Munich. Zweibrücken was therefore the true scene of Henry Villard's boyhood, although he made many visits — sometimes staying a year — to his grandparents in Speyer. The boy early proved himself a natural leader in games and in the broils between the children of the city's aristocracy and those of the working classes. ”

"I knew there was something wrong!" Ferris said. "Old Clinchell isn't acting right. He's awful mad when you're looking at him. He wants to kill Andrest on sight, and he'll likely do it. That would leave you in a hole!"
"He's shooting a scatter-gun, Ferris!" Lesgar exclaimed. "That peace bond is only part. These other papers are notices from the banks at Bandsaw and River Bridge. Fact is, we've been borrowing a good deal of money. ”

"Don't forget that peace bond, Mr..Clinchell," Ferris remarked gravely. "It holds, you know—it holds, all excepting in self-defense."
"It 'll be self-defense! I'd shoot him down like a dog! That man's impident!" Sheriff Ferris watched the old man tearing up and down the veranda, swearing and growling, waving his hands and shaking his shaggy head. The sheriff had watched a good many men in his time, good men, bad men, mean men, men who were in earnest and men who put on. ”

“ After dinner Ferris and the two deputies rode away again. At the edge of the clearing the sheriff, who had looked back often, turned to his deputies and remarked:
"The old man's all waked up!"
"Mostly about young Andrest," one of his companions suggested bluntly.
"Just what I was thinking. We'd better find Andrest and get to talk with him. The old man's powerful strong-acting when somebody's watching, but he ate his dinner same as the rest of us, and about as much. I'm not satisfied, not the way things are looking. You ride over to that shanty-boat and get Andrest to come down to Deerport. ”

“ And I was about to push on; but Sperver, as obstinate as any other good German, was not going to let me off without edifying me upon the history of the people with whom my lot was going to be cast for awhile, and holding me by the frogs of my fur coat he went on—
"There's, besides, Sébalt Kraft, the master of the hounds; he is rather a dismal fellow, but he has not his equal at sounding the horn; and there will be Karl Trumpf, the butler, and Christian Becker, and everybody, unless they have all gone to bed." ”

M. HERZOG: “...Speer told me that it was urgent that I should assume new functions in connection with the question of labor. A few days later he asked me to go with him to general headquarters, and I was introduced to the Führer who told me that I must accept this new appointment without fail.” ”

“ Report of the chief of the department on the conference on the 23d of March with Milch, Witzell, Leeb, in Minister Speer’s office. The Führer looks upon Speer as his principal mouthpiece, his trusted adviser in all economic spheres. Speer is the only one who has something to say today. He can interfere in any department. ”

“ I should further like to submit Document Number Speer-43 which is a memorandum from Speer to Hitler, dated 20 September 1944. Mr. President, this may be found on Page 6 of the English text, Page 3 of the French and Russian texts. From this document you can see that Speer was considered hostile to the Party (“parteifremd” and “parteifeindlich”) by Bormann and Goebbels because of his circle of collaborators. Speer writes in his memorandum, and I quote:
“The task which I have to fulfill is a nonpolitical one. ”

“ Fortunately Sperver happened to be [Pg 127] passing in the neighborhood. He heard my cries, and promptly coming to my aid, he pulled me out and carried me to safer ground. Meanwhile my absence from home had been discovered, and the men servants had been sent in all directions to search for me. My father was so delighted at seeing me again, unharmed, in Sperver's arms, that he rewarded his ranger with a brand-new carbine and a brace of his favorite hounds. ”

“ Sperver knew every nook and corner of this vast place. He turned now to the right and now to the left, and I followed him breathless. At last he stopped on a spacious landing, and said to me—
"Now, Fritz, I will leave you for a minute with the people of the castle to inform the young Countess Odile of your arrival."
"Do just what you think right."
"Then you will find the head butler, Tobias Offenloch, an old soldier of the regiment of Nideck. He campaigned in France under the count; and you will see his wife, a Frenchwoman, Marie Lagoutte, who pretends that she comes of a high family." ”

“ Sperry announced.
“A spy!” Grandfather Norton exclaimed. “We are all loyal people out here.”
“You don’t understand,” said Sperry. “He was last seen heading this way in a small motorboat.
“It’s that photographer over at Granite Head,” he explained to Betty. “You may know him.”
“Oh—oh, yes!” Betty was startled. “He did all our work. I never dreamed—well, yes, there were some queer things about him.”
“Queer!” the secret agent exploded. “I’d say so. He’s one of the most dangerous men on foot. We’ve been looking for him. He was a spy in India. Got out just in time to save his neck. ”

The industries under the Defendant Speer’s control were really the most important users of manpower in Germany; and thus, according to the Defendant Sauckel, Speer’s labor requirements received unconditional priority over all other demands for labor. We refer to the transcript of the interrogation of the Defendant Sauckel on the 22d of September 1945. ”

“ General Pershing clapped his hands.
“I know you now,” he said. “Colonel, these are the young officers who went to Berlin and brought back the list of German spies in America.”
“That so, sir?” said Colonel Gibson. “Seems to me they are very young to have been entrusted with such a task.”
“Young they are in years,” said the American commander-in-chief, “but they are older than a good many of us in experience, so far as this war is concerned. If my memory serves me right, I believe they put in several years with the French and British before the United States entered the conflict. Am I right?” ”

“ Ferris suggested.
"Yes—five-six years. Time of the big overflow he had two rafts and his shanty-boat loaded of people. He was sure a useful riveh-rat those days! Take those riveh people, and they know how to keep on top the water and live. Good-natured fellow, that Andrest—real friendly."
Ferris left the posse to its trailing and rode on to the plantation. He found old Clinchell pacing up and down on the veranda, his hands twitching, his face working, his eyes rolling. ”

“ It's ag'in' the law to make threats. If Mr. Clinchell don't want to go under bonds, o' course, I got to protect my life. That's self-defense. Sheriff Ferris heard him say he'd kill me—heard him say it over his dinner-table last Saturday evening. Now didn't you, sheriff?"
The sheriff blinked unhappily. Clinchell was glaring at him, and the county judge was assuming a calmly judicial air.
"You wouldn't say a lady lied, would you, sheriff?" Andrest continued harshly. "I don't allow any man to say a lady lied, Mr. Ferris!" ”
