Yamhill County, Oregon

Definition and stakes

Lewis Ankeny McArthur,  Oregon Geographic Names (1952)

“ YAMHILL COUNTY. This county was created July 5, 1843, and now has a land area of 709 square miles according to the Bureau of the Census. It was one of the original four districts of Oregon and embraced the southwest part of the territory. Several counties have been taken from it. The origin and meaning of the name are uncertain, but the best evidence indicates that it is the white man's name for the Yamhill Indians. The Yamhill Indians were of the Kalapooian family, formerly living on Yamhill River, in Yamhill County. ”

Alfred L. Shelton was reared at home and his education was that afforded by the district schools of Oregon. In 1887, when about eighteen years old, he came to Garfield county, Washington, and purchased land, on which he has since resided.

Portrait of Frances Fuller Victor Frances Fuller Victor,  All Over Oregon and Washington (1872)

“ About twenty-five miles above Oregon City, the Yamhill River enters the Wallamet from the west. It is a narrow stream, and its entrance is almost hidden by the profusion of overhanging shrubbery and trees. Waiting here for freight and passengers, is the Dayton, a commodious steamer of light draught, which will convey us, if we so elect, to the towns of Dayton, La Fayette, or McMinnville, in Yamhill County—one of the finest agricultural portions of the State, and celebrated for having domiciled, at one time or another, almost every person of prominence in the State, prior to 1868. ”
