Cellular respiration

Definition and stakes

Portrait of George Bidie George Bidie,  Madras Journal of Literature and Science (1858)

“ If we now review the function of respiration in the animal and plant, we shall find that although by this process the animal eliminates carbon and consumes oxygen, while the plant fixes the former and gives off the latter, being thus so far opposed in object, they nevertheless agree inasmuch as respiration is carried on in both kingdoms, by means of organs of a cellular structure. ”

“ At the same time the carbon dioxide which is being formed at the cells passes into the blood. An exchange of gases is thus taking place between the cells and the blood, similar to [pg 090] that taking place between the blood and the air. This exchange is known as internal, or cell, respiration. By internal respiration the oxygen reaches the place where it is to serve its purpose, and the carbon dioxide begins its movement toward the exterior of the body. This "breathing by the cells" is, therefore, the final and essential act of respiration. ”

“ There the blood is separated from the air by a membrane so delicate that gases can readily pass through it; and, hence, on leaving the lungs the blood has got rid of the waste carbon dioxide, and its red corpuscles are laden with fresh oxygen. This exchange of useless carbon dioxide for oxygen constitutes respiration or breathing.
The mechanism of respiration.—In active animals the air inside the lungs soon becomes vitiated, unless there is some means of changing it. Under ordinary conditions a man changes the air in his lungs from thirteen to fifteen times a minute.
