J. Sydney Lewis Old Glass and How to Collect it

Flint glass derives its name from the fact that in England the silica, which is the main constituent of all glass, was procured from flints which were calcined and pulverised. Being highly refractive it is extensively employed in the manufacture of optical instruments—telescopes, microscopes, etc. Quartz and fine sand are now used in the place of flints. The glass is soft, and hence easily scratched and dulled. It is essential that only the purest materials be employed, and special furnaces and pots are needed. Flint glass was known in quite early times.

You must take care never to employ flint-glass for instruments which are to be submitted to the action of certain fluids—such as sulphuretted and phosphuretted hydrogen, and the hydro-sulphurets; for these compounds are capable of decomposing flint-glass, in consequence of its containing oxide of lead. In general, hard common glass is preferable to flint-glass for all instruments which are to be employed in chemistry.

For general purposes flint glass is vastly superior to the soft soda mentioned above. In the first place, it is very much stronger, and also less liable to crack when heated — not alone when it is new, but also, and especially, after it has been partly worked. Apparatus made of flint glass is less liable to crack and break at places of unequal thickness than if made of soda glass.
