Portrait of Mary L. Day Mary L. Day,  The World As I Have Found It

“ The female pupils are taught to make all kinds of ornamental bead-work, to crochet and knit woolen and worsted goods, to sew by hand and with machines, and some of them acquire surprising skill, though my own experience does not give me a high opinion of the efficacy of attempting to teach sewing, so very few ever practice it after leaving school, though I have found it convenient to sew on a button or repair a rent on occasion. Sewing by the blind, though it may surprise the beholder for the skill acquired under difficulties, will seldom claim their admiration for its own merit. ”

Portrait of Harriet Martineau Harriet Martineau,  Once a Week (1862)

“ Every plan proposed seems to bring us round to the consideration of the clothing of these hundreds of thousands of men, women and children: and therefore we may consider the plan of the Sewing-schools one of the very best which has been carried out in any degree. More of them are wanted; and there is an earnest cry for the extension of such as exist. To these Sewing-rooms we must look for the possibility of carrying out Lord Palmerston’s recommendation that the present dreary opportunity should be used for keeping the children and lads at school. ”

R. R. Lutz,  Wage Earning and Education

“ The only instruction offered by the public school system at the present time which can be considered as trade-extension training for the garment industries is that given in the sewing classes in the technical night schools. The enrollment in these classes during the second term of 1915-16 was 229. Only a small proportion of the girls and women enrolled in the night sewing classes make their living by sewing. The students employed by day in clothing factories or in any of the sewing trades constitute somewhat less than 15 per cent of the total number enrolled. ”
