By parallactic motion is meant the apparent displacement in consequence of the solar motion which is now known with great accuracy, and amounts to 19.5 kilometers per second. Even in a single year, then, the sun's motion is twice the diameter of the earth's orbit, so that in a hundred or more years, a much longer base line is available than in the usual type of observations for stellar parallax. If we ascertain the parallactic motion of a group of stars, then we can find their average distance. It is found, for example, that the mean parallax of stars of the sixth magnitude is 0".014.

He, indeed, probably even then, suspected that close equal stars formed genuine couples; but he waited, if so, for evidence of the connection. The chief subject of his experiments on parallax was Epsilon Boötis, an exquisitely tinted, unequal pair. But he soon became aware that either stellar parallax was elusively small, or that he was on the wrong track for detecting it. And, since his favourite stars have proved to be a binary combination, it was, of course, drawing water in a sieve to make one the test of perspective shifting in the other.

We find from table 7 that the absolute magnitude of the parallax stars varies between -4 and +11, the extreme stars being of type M. The absolutely brightest stars have a rather great distance from us and their absolute magnitude is badly determined. The brightest star in the table is Antares with M = -4.6, which value is based on the parallax 0′′.014 found by Adams. So small a parallax value is of little reliability when it is directly computed from annual parallax observations, but is more trustworthy when derived with the spectroscopic method of Adams.
