“ If we trace cyclical reproduction to the adaptation of different developmental stages or generations to deviating conditions of life, we thus not only explain the exact and often striking agreement between form and mode of life—we not only bridge over the gap between metamorphosis and alternation of generation, but we can also understand how, within one and the same family of Hydrozoa, species can occur with or without alternation of generation, and further how other species can exist in which the alternation of generation (the production of free Medusæ) is limited to the one sex ”

“ This was Nägeli's mistake, and that of his followers as well, that he ascribed to his 'principle of perfecting' the essential rôle in directing the whole movement of evolution, while the general structure of all species shows us that they are, so to speak, built up of adaptations. But adaptations could not be—or could only be fortuitously and exceptionally—the direct result of an internal power of development, since the very essence of adaptational changes is that they are variations which bring the organism into harmony with the conditions of its life. ”

“ But are these three factors actually competent to explain the complete transformation of one species into another? Can they transform more than mere single characters or groups of characters? Can we consider them as the sole causes of the regular phenomena of the development of the races of animals and plants? Is there not perhaps an unknown force underlying these numberless developmental series as the true motor power—a “developmental force” urging species to vary in certain directions and thusxviii calling into existence the chief types and sub-types of the animal and vegetable kingdoms? ”

“ I have intentionally begun the consideration of sexual selection with the cases most difficult to interpret on this theory, with those which have called forth the greatest divergence of opinion—the decorative colours and forms, the song of birds and of insects, the alluring odours—in short, all the courtship-adaptations of the males; these are the most difficult to deal with, because it is not easy to demonstrate directly that the females do choose. But if we revise them briefly in reverse order, I believe that all doubt as to the reality of choice on the part of the females will disappear. ”

“ Wilhelm Roux has given an explanation of the cause of these wonderfully fine adaptations by applying the principle of selection to the parts of the organism. Just as there is a struggle for survival among the individuals of a species, and the fittest are victorious, so also do even the smallest living particles contend with one another, and those that succeed best in securing food and place grow and multiply rapidly, and so displace those that are less suitably equipped. The three factors in the process of selection—variability, heredity, and struggle for existence—are all present. ”

“ The principle which Empedocles announced, in his own peculiar and fantastic way, is the dominating one, and I must insist upon what has so often been objected to as an exaggeration—that everything depends upon adaptation and is governed by processes of selection. From the first beginnings of life, up to its highest point, only what is purposeful has arisen, because the living units at every grade are continually being sifted according to their utility, and the ceaseless struggle for existence is continually producing and favouring the fittest. ”

The struggle that ensued may now be regarded as at an end, at least as far as we are concerned—that is, in the domain of science. The doctrine of descent has gained the day, and we can confidently say that the Evolution theory has become a permanent possession of science that can never again be taken away. It forms the foundation of all our theories of the organic world, and all further progress must start from this basis. ”

“ Even if we define death as an arrest of life, the dissolution of Magosphaera into many single cells which still live, is not death, for life does not cease in the organic matter of which the sphere was composed, but expresses itself in another form. It is mere sophistry to say that life ceases because the cells are no longer combined into a colony. Life does not in truth cease for a moment. ”

“ How a biophor comes to develop from itself the phenomena of life is quite unknown to us; we know neither the interaction of the ultimate material particles nor the forces which bring it about; we cannot tell what moves the hordes of different kinds of biophors to range themselves together in a particular order, what molecular displacements and variations arise from this, or what influence the external world has, and so forth. We see only the visible outcome of an endless number of invisible movements—growth, division, multiplication, reconstruction, and differentiation. ”

“ The conception of an evolution of the world of life upon the earth reaches far beyond the bounds of any single science, and influences our whole realm of thought. It means nothing less than the elimination of the miraculous from our knowledge of nature, and the placing of the phenomena of life on the same plane as the other natural processes, that is, as having been brought about by the same forces, and being subject to the same laws. ”

“ The occurrence of a particular change out of the countless possible changes would be about as likely as if one out of a hundred thousand pins thrown out of a window were to balance on its point when it reached the ground. The assumption scarcely deserves to be called a scientific hypothesis, and yet it must be made by all who accept the transmission of acquired characters,—that is unless they adopt the hypothesis of pangenesis, which is quite as improbable, and which even Darwin did not look upon as a real, but only as a formal explanation. ”

“ Many hybrids suggest one parent-form in the leaves, the other in the blossoms. In the same way in the child the form of eye may be that of the father, the colour of the iris that of the mother, the nose maternal, the mouth paternal—in short, the preponderance in heredity swings hither and thither from part to part, from organ to organ, from character to character, and this is even the rule though the oscillations may not always be apparent and are often invisible. ”

“ The manifold diversity of colour and form adaptation is so great among insects, to which protection from their enemies is so necessary, and especially among butterflies, that I should never come to an end if I were to try to give even an approximate idea of it. Let us, therefore, turn now from such cases to a higher—the highest—grade of adaptation, that in which there is not only a mimicry of special and complex coloration, but in which the whole animal has become like some external object, and is thereby secured from discovery. ”

“ But, nevertheless, I hope to have shown that the theory of natural selection is by no means incompatible with the theory of ‘the continuity of the germ-plasm;’ and, further, that if we accept this latter theory, sexual reproduction appears in an entirely new light: it has received a meaning, and has to a certain extent become intelligible.
The time in which men believed that science could be advanced by the mere collection of facts has long passed away: we know that it is not necessary to accumulate a vast number of miscellaneous facts, or to make as it were a catalogue of them ”

“ The beards of hens, the tail-feathers of the long-tailed domestic cocks, the long and short, straight and curved bills of pigeons, the enormously long ruffled feathers of the Jacobin, the multiplication of the tail-feathers in the fan-tail, and innumerable other breed-characters of these playthings of the breeder, prove that when variation-tendencies of any part are once present, that is, when they have arisen through germinal selection, they apparently go on unchecked until their further development would permanently and irretrievably destroy the harmony of the parts. ”

“ What has been regarded as absolutely distinct from the nature of animals is said to differ from their mental activities only in degree, and to have evolved from them. The mind of a Kant, of a Laplace, of a Darwin—or to ascend into the plane of the highest and finest emotional life, the genius of a Raphael or a Mozart—to have any real connexion, however far back, with the lowly psychical life of an animal! ”

“ If we now remember that a considerable number of diseases are already known to be caused by the presence of living organisms in the body, and that these diseases may be transmitted from one organism to another in the form of germs, ought we not to conclude from the above-mentioned facts, that the symptoms are due to an unknown microbe which finds its nutritive medium in the nervous tissues, rather than to suppose that they are due to morphological changes, such as a modification of the histological or molecular structure of certain parts of the nervous system? ”

“ While Romanes supposed that 'natural selection could in no case have been the cause' of the sterility, I believe, on the contrary, that it could only have been produced by natural selection; it arises simply, as all adaptations do, through personal selection on a basis of germinal selection, and it is not a preliminary condition of the separation of species, but an adaptation for the purpose of making as pure and clean a separation as possible. It is obviously an advantage for both the divergent tendencies of variation that they should intermingle as little as possible. ”

“ If we wished to attack the problem of heredity at its roots we should first of all have to try to understand the process of life itself as a series of physico-chemical sequences. Perhaps this will be achieved up to a certain point in the future, but if we were to wait for this we should in the meantime have to abandon all attempts at a theoretical interpretation of the phenomena of development and heredity, and might indeed have to postpone them to the Greek Kalends. ”

“ We know further that the growth of the individual depends chiefly upon the multiplication of cells and only to a slight extent upon the growth of single cells. It is therefore clear that a limit of growth is imposed by a limitation in the processes by which cells are increased, both as regards the number of cells produced and the rate at which they are formed. How could we otherwise explain the fact that an animal ceases to grow long before it has reached the physiologically attainable maximum of its species, without at the same time suffering any loss of vital energy? ”

“ When, in speaking of plant-hybrids, I said that the collective ids of the germ-plasm of a species must be equivalent in regard to the characters of the species, I did not speak quite precisely; in the majority of ids, in many cases in an overwhelming majority, this must be the case, but not actually in all, at least not on the assumption we make that the transformation of species is accomplished under the control of natural selection. ”

“ For it thus supplies the keystone in the arch of our interpretation of nature and gives it unity; for the first time it makes it possible to form a conception of a world-mechanism, in which each stage is the result of the one before it, and the cause of the succeeding one.
How deeply all our earlier opinions are affected by this doctrine will become clear if we fix our attention on a single point, the derivation of the human understanding from that of animal ancestors. What of the reason of Man, of his morals, of his freedom of will? may be asked, as it has been, and still is often asked. ”

“ In conclusion, I should wish to call attention to an idea which is rather implied than expressed in this essay:—it is, that reproduction did not first make its appearance coincidently with death. Reproduction is in truth an essential attribute of living matter, just as is the growth which gives rise to it. It is as impossible to imagine life enduring without reproduction as it would be to conceive life lasting without the capacity for absorption of food and without the power of metabolism. ”

“ In some quarters this whole conception of germinal selection has been characterized as the merest figment of imagination, condemned on this ground alone, that it is based on the differences in nutrition between such extremely minute quantities of substance as the chromosomes of nuclear substance within the germ-cell. The quantity of substance is certainly minute, but it needs nutriment none the less, and can we believe that the stream of nourishment for all the invisibly minute vital elements is exactly alike? ”

“ Charles Darwin championed, in the main, the same fundamental ideas as had been promulgated by his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, by Treviranus, and by Lamarck: species only seem to us immutable; in reality they can vary, and become transformed into other species, and the living world of our day has arisen through such transformations, through a sublime process of evolution which began with the lowest forms of life, but by degrees, in the course of unthinkably long ages, progressed to organisms more and more complex in structure, more and more effective in function. ”
