“ THE FRIENDLY SPIES A Tale of Camp Borden November, 1916
The main camping ground of the Huron Indians was near where Camp Borden is now situated.
Where soldiers build their camp fires,
At night there gather 'round
The spirits of the Hurons
From Happy Hunting ground,
No sentry hears their footsteps,
They need no countersigns;
As silent as the moonlight,
They pass within the lines.
Fierce shine their dusky faces
As through the tents they glide,
Once more they smell the war paint
And know a warrior's pride

Little Visits with Great Americans…

“ The farmers will be the dominating class in the development of the Northwest, and I hope to see more and more of them in politics.”
In his contact with his fellow-men Mr. Borden’s manner is marked by a quiet dignity and cordiality that has won him many friends. While he has numerous political enemies, there are few men in the Dominion who are as popular personally. Mr. Borden likes to meet and exchange views with the average citizen. A little story is told of him in his recent campaign which is characteristic.

Portrait of H. A. Lamb H. A. Lamb,  Somewhere in the Pacific (1917)

“ Sure, th' man had his charts, an' he was dead in th' shteamer track, wasn't he? A drunken shtoker could av brought her into th' strait safely an' gone to shlape over it, at that.” Borden shook his head gloomily. He is a religious man, and has odds and ends of scripture at his tongue's end. “'For as th' wind goeth over it, it is gone, an' th' place thereof shall know it no more,'” he quoted. “It is a sad thing, lad, if that fine ship is lost with all hands.”
“The sea takes its toll of ships, Terry.”
