“ Brookfield's Essex is not merely the brave soldier, the badly-used favourite, and the hero of the mob; he is also the far-seeing strategist and the great statesman with schemes of toleration and popular government in advance of his age.... We follow the account of the expedition to Cadiz with a new enthusiasm.... Mrs. Brookfield's Essex is a real personality, and she makes not only him but the whole atmosphere of the period live for us. This is especially the case in the account of his relations with Elizabeth. ”

“ That at a time when Charles Wyndham was appearing {178} in his favourite part of David Garrick, for a run, he was sitting in the club named after the great actor, just under one of his several portraits there, when Brookfield went up to Wyndham and said: "It really seems quite surprising, you grow more like Garrick every day." But the hunting season was far away, and the growing potatoes were grievously beset by weeds; so he had cut and thrust with his sharp-bladed hoe from early morning till the sun burned the crest of the great high-shouldered hill which appeared to close in the valley like a rampart, off Grenoble way.
