Frederic Boase, Modern English biography, volume 1…
“ Note.—His father James Byrne introduced in Powell’s pantomime Harlequin Amulet or the Magic of Mona at Drury Lane theatre Christmas 1799 an entirely new dress for the harlequin consisting of a white silk shape fitting without a wrinkle into which 308 variegated silk patches were woven, the whole being profusely covered with 48,000 spangles. He completely altered the manner of playing harlequin by making him a graceful and agile dancer instead of merely posturing on the stage in 5 positions. ”
