“ The king of Carrick, as the earl was widely called, was ‘ane particular man, and ane werry greedy man, and cared not how he got land, so that he could come by the same.’ He had been scheming for a few of the abbey lands of Glenluce when the abbot died. ”

“ Carrick introduced himself, and welcomed his guest cordially, explaining to him that they had not arrived at the dignity of hotels, and that the taverns were but poor affairs, so he would be pleased to offer him the hospitality of his own house.
"Thank you," he returned. "You are the father of my ward, I presume."
"Yes, she is my little girl;" with a smile.
"An odd sort of charge. Though I suppose it was because I was of his country. Nations are clannish."
"We shall get so mixed up that we shall hardly be able to trace our forbears. On her mother's side my little girl is mostly French." ”

“ Having quarrelled with one of the members of his family, he suddenly quitted his home, and was taken into the employment of a chemist in Carlisle named Brunel, who soon began to take great interest in his advancement. Carrick eventually became himself a chemist in his native city. His heart was so entirely given over to painting, however, that he much neglected his business. He had been painting miniatures for several years before he had ever seen a miniature from any hand but his own. ”

“ Judson promised, and the fellow,—none other than the pent-browed peasant,—had related all he knew of the Krovitzers' plans. Carrick confessed to some trepidation when he had heard that so much was known outside their own party. But he had stood his guns manfully and refused to fly. He gave as his reason his loyalty to Calvert Carter. When Judson learned that his old captain was walking straight into the impending peril he was greatly surprised, but promised to take care of him or forfeit his life. Carrick by way of reply had innocently inquired who was sergeant of relief that night. ”

“ He was one of the many Irish gallants who found favour in the eyes of Queen Elizabeth. From Carrick, a drive of eight miles brings us to Lough Coumshinawn, a lonely tarn lying high among the Comeragh mountains, on one side of which the cliff rises perpendicularly to a height of seven hundred feet. The railway from Carrick runs through the beautiful valley of the Suir to Kilsheelan, and then passes to the left of the Knockmealdown mountains to Clonmel, the capital of the "premier county." The town is pleasantly placed in a thriving centre of local trade. ”

CRAG, or CARREG (Welsh) ,
CARRAG (Cornish) ,
a rock. The words are usually applied to large natural rocks, more or less elevated. Carrick and Carrig are the names of numerous districts in Ireland, as well as Carrick in Ayrshire; Carrigafoyle (the rock of the hole, phoill) , in the Shannon; Carrickaness (of the waterfall) ; Ballynacarrick (the town of the rocks) ; Carrigallen, Irish Carraig-aluinn (the beautiful rock) ”

“ CARRICK TO DONEGAL
We put up at the Glencolumbkille Hotel in Carrick. Here we hired a new car, with a stout, white horse to draw it, which took us to the base of Bunglass Head and waited for our return. It is a hard climb of over three miles to reach the summit, over rocks, bog, and heather, but we were well rewarded for our trouble. Bunglass fills the rôle of a grand-stand, as it were, from which you get a good view of Slieve League Mountain, whose base rises abruptly out of the sea, which breaks against it with great violence. ”

“ Wouldn’t I!”
“Some of those Irish tenants are very poor, sir, I have heard.”
“Poor be hanged! What is a man’s own, ought to be his own. Carrick says there are some years that he does not draw two thousand pounds, all told.”
“Indeed, sir! That is not much for a peer.”
“It’s not much for a commoner, let alone a peer,” said Roland, growing fierce. “If I were no better off than Carrick, I’d drop the title; that’s what I’d do. Why, if he could live as a peer ought, do you suppose we should be in the position we are? One a soldier; one (and that’s me) lowered to be a common old proctor ”

“ If Carrick could be as other earls are, and have interest with the Government, and that, we should stand a chance of getting properly provided for. Of course he can make interest with nobody while his estates bring him in next door to nothing.”
“Are there no means of improving his estates, Mr. Roland?” asked Jenkins.
“If there were, he’s not the one to do it. And I don’t know that it would do him any material good, after all,” acknowledged Roland. “If he gets one thousand a year, he spends two; and if he had twenty thousand, he’d spend forty. ”

“ I'm wondering if I'd better call the captain."
"Do you think the stranger is traveling full speed?" demanded Carrick.
"Too far away to be certain, sir, but I should say she was."
"Then you would better call Captain Rourke," advised Donald Carrick quietly, while to Fleming he added, in an undertone: "If it's the Budzibu, then perhaps Ling succeeded in signaling her before fate overtook him, and she's trying to overhaul us."
"'Trying' to overhaul us?" retorted the chemist. "She won't have to try. That greyhound can't fail to overtake this slab-hulled sea cripple! ”

“ The historical ballad of May Culzean is supposed to founded on fact. There certainly was a Lady of that name, who lived in Carrick, and who is represented as a woman of extraordinary virtue and heroism, and who, we are led to believe, was a beautiful woman, and this Sir John, being of the order of Dominican Friars, has great authority in the country, probably about Carrick. ”

“ After a little the yacht was half a mile astern, presently a mile, then a mile and a half.
"Now she's turning in toward the coast," declared Carrick finally, whereat Rourke bounded forward to use his glass.
"Unless that craft is playing a game to fool us, thin she has given up the chase," the master of the tug announced. ”

“ For me, I went chiefly with Sir Thomas, my master, as was my duty; but being allowed to choose my companion, I chose Muckle Hugh from Kirriemore, which marches with mine own home of Kirrieoch on Minnochside. Hugh was the strongest man in all Carrick, and had joined the command chiefly for the love of me—because he had once herded sheep for us, and my mother had been kind to him and given him new milk instead of skim for his porridge. ”

“ Carrick inquired.
"Not a one," rejoined Rourke. "'Twas that quick ye called me into ser-rvice the day that I had no time to get hold of me other wireless man, Jim Shea."
"Then I must get up to the wireless room," Carrick went on. "There must be some one listening for signals, or the master of the Vulcan would deem himself on the wrong course, and perhaps turn aside."
Fleming, with Rourke, accompanied Carrick to the wireless room, where the three men gazed solemnly at the bloodstains on the floor ”

“ But they say if you save a man's life he'll make you rue it. Mercy, my lass, you are well respected in the parish. Take a thought, now: better be a farrier's wife than a gentleman's mistress."
Mercy did take her head "out of the cow" at this, and, for once, her cheek burned with anger; but the unwonted sentiment died before it could find words, and she said, quietly, "I need not be either, against my will."
Young Carrick made many such appeals to Mercy Vint; but he could never bring her to confess to him that he and she had ever been more than friends, or were now anything less than friends. ”

“ So at first we got little satisfaction, and it did not help matters that, on the second day of our visit, the Bargany Kennedies and Mures rode into the town in force—all sturdy men from the landward parts of Carrick, while we were mostly slighter and limberer lads, from the side of it that looks towards the sea.
The next day, as I went down the Canongate with the gold lilies of Cassillis on my cocked bonnet, I declare that nearly every third man I met was a Bargany lout, swaggering with his silly favour of red and white in his cap. ”

“ Carter drew her back gently. "I don't think he would mind—if you knew. Poor chap, his has certainly been a hard fate."
Responding to the appeal in their hearts, which penetrated the numbing faculties, Carrick, in one final effort, threw off the shackles of Death and stood free for a season. His eyes opened at first without recognition for the pair bending over him. Then a gradual joy warmed the cooling embers of his life.
"'Ighness," he cried; the neighborhood of Death stripped his speech to its native crudeness. "'Ighness, a man carries to 'is grave the face of one woman in 'is 'eart. ”

“ For the first month it had interested and amused Caroline, then it had embittered her. She and her father had no bright prospects in this new country.
After supper she seated herself at the writing-table in the office and proceeded to answer the letter which the afternoon train had brought. The travelers, who preserved their farm habits, came in early from the porch and passed through on their way to bed. Only David Temple sat in the room and read a newspaper. Carrick himself lay in his hammock at the end of the veranda, coughing querulously from time to time. ”

40. Recalling Carrick, of which Maybole is the capital. “The family of Cassilis, in early times, had been so powerful that the head of it was generally termed the King of Carrick:” Sharpe. But Garrick may have come in in some other way. ”

The first transaction which he has narrated, is the affair at Lanark; but it is evident from what he says, that Wallace must have often before mingled in deadly feud with the English soldiers, and done them serious injury ”
