Definition and stakes

Sydney Sandys,  Jack Carstairs of the power house (1909)

Darwen had a way of digressing at critical points which always jarred on the mathematically direct mind of Carstairs. ”

The Scratch Pack

At his left Gheena, the too eager youngster, held well together, the girl sitting down in her saddle, her hands low, giving and taking to her impetuous mount, both so young, so full of sheer keen life, both with all their limbs their own, both unknowing trouble. ”
