Lewis Ankeny McArthur,  Oregon Geographic Names (1952)

“ The Circle Creek bridge is a well-known structure on the Oregon Coast Highway southwest of Cannon Beach Junction, although a relocation of the highway will eventually eliminate the crossing Civil BEND, Douglas County. Civil Bend is one of the amusing place names of Douglas County because it was applied in derision-the locality was so uncivil. The Bend is a prominent reverse kink in South Umpqua River a little to the south west of Roseburg. The name is said to refer to the boisterous activities of visitors who came to see the horse races in early days. ”

“ The history of its formation and boundary as well as the organization of Douglas County was in the plans of this article and would be except for its length, probably already too long. Yet it ap- pears to one so closely connected with the events of which he writes, to be naturally connected, for did not Umpqua Academy, helped on by these very men, send out from its walls the men and women whose footsteps became the bright pathways that threaded all the Southern Oregon country and whose splendid characters became a part of the warp and woof of our commonwealth? ”

Frank E Hodgkin,  Pen Pictures of Representative Men of Oregon (1882)

“ He also owns large tracts of land in Douglas county, which he is rapidly improving. He takes a lively interest in politics and in a quiet way is a powerful faction. His integrityis unquestioned and his credit is unlimited. He is undoubtedly one of the most sagacious business men on the Northwest coast, and evinces un- usual enterprise, tempered with judgment in the management of his affairs. ”
