Portrait of William Wells Brown William Wells Brown,  Three Years in Europe — Letter XXI.

“ Born in the highest possible position in America, Mr. Phillips has all the advantages that birth can give to one in that country. Educated at the first University, graduating with all the honours which the College could bestow on him, and studying the law and becoming a member of the bar, he has all the accomplishments that these advantages can give to a man of a great mind. Nature has treated him as a favourite. His stature is not tall, but handsome; his expressive countenance paints and reflects every emotion of his soul. ”

Portrait of William Wells Brown William Wells Brown,  Three Years in Europe: Places I Have Seen and People I Have Met

“ As a public speaker, Mr. Phillips is, without doubt, the first in the United States. Within the past ten years, a great impetus has been given to the anti-slavery movement in America by coloured men who have escaped from slavery.

Portrait of Chauncey M. Depew Chauncey M. Depew,  My Memories of Eighty Years

“ Phillips rarely made a gesture or spoke above the conversational, but his musical voice reached the remotest comers of the hall. The eager audience, fearful of losing a word, would bend forward with open mouths as well as attentive ears. It was always a hostile audience at the beginning of Mr. Phillips's address, but before the end he swayed them to applause, tears, or laughter, as a skilled performer upon a perfect instrument. His subject was nearly always slavery, his views very extreme and for immediate abolition, but at that time he had a very small following. ”
