Mrs. Murphy

Definition and stakes

Nell Speed,  Molly Brown's Sophomore Days

“ It's tea and cake always and more besides. 'Have you a little spare room in your oven so that I can bake some muffins for some friends this mornin', Mrs. Murphy?' she'll say of a Sunday. She's that hospitable and kind, sir. There's nobody like her in Queen's. I'd be sorry ever to lose her."
"Should you call her hair red, Mrs. Murphy?" asked the Professor irrelevantly.
"It's more red than anything else, sir, especially when the weather's damp."
"And what color should you say her eyes were, Mrs. Murphy?"
"An' you've not seen her eyes, surely, sir, if you can be askin' me that question.

An hour later, Virginia, the supper table atmosphere almost forgotten in her glad relief over Mrs. Murphy’s immediate future, ran up-stairs and down the hall to her own room.

Portrait of Cora Marsland Cora Marsland,  The Angel of the Gila: A Tale of Arizona

“ Murphy how interested she was in what Brigham had told her of his little sisters, Nora and Kathleen.
"Won't you sit down, Mrs. Murphy?"
Esther's voice and manner were very charming at that moment, as she drew a chair forward for her companion.
Somewhat mollified, Mrs. Murphy seated herself.
"Oh, I don't mind ef I do set down. I'm that tuckered out with scrubbin' and washin' an' cookin', I'm afeared I can't dance till mornin'."
As she talked, she fanned herself with her red cotton handkerchief.
"You enjoy dancing, don't you, Mrs. Murphy?" asked the teacher, with apparent interest.
