Constitution of North Korea (1972)

On the basis of laying a solid foundation for the building of an independent and sovereign State in the political, economic, cultural, and military fields, he founded the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Having put forward Juche-oriented revolutionary lines, Comrade Kim Il Sung wisely led various stages of social revolution and construction to strengthen and develop the Republic into a socialist country centred on the masses, into a socialist State which is independent, self-sufficient and self-reliant in defense.

The exposure of the Agrarian Reform as a fraud had hurt the Communists, and the disinterested spirit of the United States occupation was gaining recognition throughout Korea in spite of initial blunders. Pyongyang could not afford to let South Korea take the lead in forming a government, and July 1948 dated the creation of a Communist state known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea. After adopting a constitution modeled after that of Communist Bulgaria, the Supreme People’s Council claimed to represent all Korea.

The sovereignty of the Republic of Korea shall reside in the people, and all state authority shall emanate from the people. Article 2 Citizenship in the Republic of Korea shall be determined by law. Citizens residing abroad shall be protected by the State. Article 3 The territory of the Republic of Korea shall consist of the Korean peninsula and its adjacent islands. Article 4 The Republic of Korea shall endeavor to maintain international peace and shall renounce all aggressive wars. The Armed Forces shall be charged with the sacred mission of national security and the defense of the land.
