Parliament of the United Kingdom Probate and Legacy Duties Act 1808… (1808 |noyear)

And where any Person duly admitted a Solicitor in the Court of Chancery or Exchequer at Westminster, or in either of the Courts of the Great Sessions in Wales, or of the Duchy of Lancaster, or of the Counties Palatine of Chester, Lancaster, and Durham, shall be also admitted to act as a Solicitor in any other of the said Courts, or in any inferior Court of Equity, or as an Attorney in any Court of Law in England, the latter Admission shall be free of Duty :
Provided such Attorney or Solicitor shall have paid the proper Stamp Duty on his former Admission, according to the Laws then in force.

The evil is undoubtedly caused by the centralisation of litigation in London, and the compression within a few months of the year of the whole of the High Court business. There is no valid reason why the Courts should not sit the whole year through, and barristers and judges take their holidays as they personally like to arrange. The amalgamation of the two branches of the legal profession has been much discussed in recent years, and it has [Pg 646] many warm advocates both among barristers and solicitors, one of the strongest being the Solicitor-General.

The term in England was formerly applied especially to those practising before the supreme courts of common law at Westminster, and corresponded to the term solicitor used in courts of Chancery; but this distinction was abolished in 1873, and solicitor is now the regular term for all such legal agents. In the United States the term is in common use, and is wide enough to include what in England would be called barristers (or counsel) , in Scotland advocates, having indeed the general sense of lawyer. In America women are admitted as attorneys.
