Definition and stakes

Matthew Henry,  Commentary on the Whole Bible… (1700s)

[2.] Their subjection to the church is described: They shall worship at thy feet ”

“ For if it be true, as the Bible declares, that when a man goes into the grave, his thoughts perish, his love and hatred and envy are no longer exercised, and he knows not anything, then whatever spirit comes to us from the unseen world, professing to be the spirit of a dead man, it comes with a lie in its mouth, and thus shows itself to be of the synagogue of Satan. ”
