Mrs. A. T. Thomson,  The life and times of George Villiers…

“ The name of Thomas Carew was distinguished in the reign of Charles I., as one of the most intellectual of his young courtiers.
He was a man of an ancient Gloucestershire family; a branch of that race settled in Devonshire, and his education was that usually assigned to youths of good birth and expectations. He was entered at Corpus Christi College, in Oxford, and his academical career was succeeded, as was customary in those times, by travelling. From the grand tour, Carew returned replete with wit, fancy, and with a high reputation for accomplishments.

William Prideaux Courtney,  Dictionary of National Biography… (1887)

“ CAREW, RICHARD (1555–1620) , poet and antiquary, is the best known member of one of the leading families of Cornwall. His father, Thomas Carew of Antony House, in the parish of East Anton , married Elisabeth, daughter of Sir Richard Edgecumbe, and their eldest son, Richard, was born at Antony House on 17 July 1555. When only eleven years old he became a gentleman commoner of Christ Church, Oxford but his rooms were in Broadgates Hall, and he was probably one of two persons called Carew appearing in a list of the undergraduated resident in that hall about 1570. ”

“ THOMAS CAREW (1598?-1639)
homas Carew is deservedly placed among the most brilliant representatives of a class of lyrists who were not only courtiers but men of rank; who, varied in accomplishments, possessing culture and taste, expressed their play of fancy with elegance and ease. The lyre of these aristocratic poets had for its notes only love and beauty, disdain, despair, and love's bounty, sometimes frivolous in sound and sometimes serious; and their work may be regarded as the ancestor of the vers de société, which has reached its perfection in Locker and Austin Dobson.
