Portrait of Hendrik Willem Van Loon Hendrik Willem Van Loon,  The Golden Book of the Dutch Navigators

“ Their mode of life, their customs, and their habits must be investigated, and they must be treated with kindness. If the natives should come on board and should steal things, the Hollanders must not mind such trifles. The chief aim of the expedition was to establish relations with whatever races were to be discovered. Of course there was little hope of finding anything except long-haired Papuans, but if by any chance Tasman should discover the unknown southland and find that this continent contained the rumored riches, he must not show himself desirous of getting gold and silver. ”

Portrait of Charles Raymond Beazley Charles Raymond Beazley,  1911 Encyclopædia Britannica (1911)

“ There he set up a post on which he hoisted the Dutch flag. Quitting Van Diemen's Land on the 5th of December, Tasman steered E. for the Solomon Islands, and on the 13th of December discovered (in 42° 10′ S., as he reckoned) a " high mountainous country," which he called Staten landt ("Land of the States," i.e., of Holland, now New Zealand) . Tasman and his company believed the newly discovered land to form part of the same great antarctic continent as the other Staten landt which Schouten and Lemaire had sighted and named to the east of Tierra del Fuego. ”
