Ice cliff

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Albert Frederick Mummery Albert Frederick Mummery,  My Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus (1895)

“ Merely a short slope of ice intervened between us and that wished-for haven. On the other side the view was most dramatic. The cliff immediately below actually overhangs. The huge pinnacle to which reference has frequently been made, as shutting in this col on its northern side, towers upwards in smooth precipitous slabs that recall the relentless cruelty of the great precipice on the Little Dru; and on the other side great ice cliffs dominate as wild and vast a wall of rock as the climber often sees. ”

Portrait of Frank Fox Frank Fox,  Switzerland

“ Indeed, if you will look closely at the line of the retreating snow—not a straight line but a billowy one, here receding into a big bay, here stubbornly holding out a promontory of white—you will note that the crevellated edge of the vanishing snow mass is not joined to the earth at all, but forms a little overhanging cliff of ice. The melting warmth is coming up from the ground rather than from the sun in the last stage of the snow-field's flight, and underneath this tiny cliff the vegetation can be seen already pushing up to life. ”
