Labor policy

Definition and stakes

Herbert Feis,  The Settlement of Wage Disputes

“ If labor organization has been able to increase the wages of certain groups of wage earners without doing equivalent harm in any other direction, there is reason for believing that a living wage policy can accomplish something of the same result for the lowest grades of industrial labor, which have been up to the present practically without organization. ”

“ This law shall be applicable to women as well as to men, and to every kind of labor. I desire to make it clear that the policy of this Government is that every man or woman who desires work shall have it, even if the Government has to give it, and I wish it also understood that an adequate wage must be paid for labor.
“Labor is no longer to be classed as an inert commodity to be bought and sold by the law of supply and demand, but the human equation shall hereafter be the commanding force in all agreements between man and capital.

Herbert Feis,  The Settlement of Wage Disputes

“ The demand of the community for the product of labor in general will ultimately keep pace with the supply of the product. Economies 50 in production throughout the whole industrial field mean that there will be more commodities to be shared out.
Thus, in spite of the fact that there may be, and often are, serious breaches of interest between particular groups of wage earners and society as a whole on the matter of increased production, there can be but one sound policy for labor as a whole.
