Yosef Karo,  Translation:Shulchan Aruch — Orach Chaim 675…

“ Therefore, if a lamp was burning all day that was kindled on Sabbath Eve for the Hanukkah mitzvah, after Sabbath one extinguishes it and [re] kindles it for the purpose of the mitzvah. In any case, one needs to kindle it in the location of its placement, for if one kindled it inside and brought it outside he has not fulfilled [the mitzvah] , for one who sees [this] will say [that] he kindled it for his own needs. Similarly, if one kindles it and holds it in place with his hand, he has not fulfilled [the mitzvah] , for one who sees [this] will say [that] he is holding it for his own needs. ”

“ At last the great day, the Bar-Mitzvah Sabbath, arrived. The synagogue was densely packed, for the interest in the event which concerned so closely the most prominent family in the congregation and its well-beloved son was universal. On the main floor the noblest and best men of the community were assembled, and from the galleries the matrons and maidens of Israel, arrayed in splendid robes, beamed radiantly down. When the time for the reading of the Torah arrived Raphael ascended the Tebah, or altar, and at once began to chant from the sacred scroll. ”

“ For the children of our age, both young and old, should know that that God-consciousness of the Jew, that wondrous sense of eternity in his mission, is not a laboriously acquired conviction, not the result of some spasmodic effort of grasping the innermost meaning of our history, but the natural pervading spirit of Jewish life, the air which the Jew breathes, when he lives with Torah as his guide and Mitzvah as his ladder towards heaven. ”
