Portrait of Elmer Ernest Southard Elmer Ernest Southard,  Shell-shock and other neuropsychiatric problems

“ On the whole, there appeared to be no convincing features of paresis or cerebrospinal syphilis. The phenomena are very possibly in part alcoholic. There appeared to be no sensory disorders, and in particular no hallucinations. The intellectual disorder is chiefly amnestic. There is little or no evidence of emotional abnormality. The curious conduct seems hardly to indicate a primary disorder of will. The main feature psychologically appears to be amnesia coupled with an inability to reckon. ”

“ The basis of neurasthenia, however, is often or even generally a hereditary taint, a nervous weakness inherited from the parents.
Psychasthenia is a neurosis or psychoneurosis similar to neurasthenia, characterized by an exhaustion of the nervous system, also by weakness of the will, overscrupulousness, fear, and a feeling of the unreality of things.
Neuropathy is a disease or disorder of the nervous system. Psychopathy is a disease or disorder of the mind.
Of late years we often hear people referred to as neurotics, neurasthenics, psychasthenics, neuropaths or psychopaths.

“ The modern trend in psychiatry is distinctly in the opposite direction. We no longer today insist upon material changes in cells and tissues for every psychotic phenomenon, but rather endeavor to investigate mental life, be it normal or abnormal, from the biologic point of view. We are being constantly confronted with the undeniable fact that whatever may be the physical substratum of mental disorder, it does not aid us in understanding the peculiar expression which a given psychosis chooses to assume. ”
