Sex chromosome

Definition and stakes

J. T. Cunningham,  Hormones and Heredity

“ In the nucleus of the female gametocytes there are two X chromosomes related to sex, in those of the male there is one X chromosome and one Y chromosome of slightly different shape. The factor for red eye occurs in the sex-chromosomes, that is to say, according to this theory, the sex-chromosome does not merely determine sex but carries other factors as well, and this fact is the explanation of sex-linked inheritance. The factor for red eye then is present in both X chromosomes of the wild female, absent from both X and Y chromosomes of the white-eyed male. ”

“ This mechanism resides in the so-called chromosomes of the nucleus. These exist for the most part in similar pairs in both sexes: but one pair is dissimilar in one sex. In mammals and man this sex is the male. Man possesses one chromosome less than woman. He possesses only one member of this pair of special sex-chromosomes, whereas she possesses two. All her ova are alike in possessing one, whereas half his sperms possess one, half possess none. Therefore, when the former kind of sperms fertilize an ovum, two sex-chromosomes [Pg 138] are present in the fertilized egg and a female results ”

“ In the female there are two of these chromosomes that we call the X chromosomes; in the male there are also two but one differs from those of the female in its shape, and in the fact that it carries none of the normal allelomorphs of the mutant factors. It is called the Y chromosome.
The course followed by the sex chromosomes and that by the characters in the case of sex {119}linked inheritance are shown in the next diagram of Drosophila illustrating a cross between a white eyed male and a red eyed female.
