Alypius

Definition and stakes

Portrait of Augustine of Hippo Augustine of Hippo,  The Confessions of Saint Augustine…

“ Those of us who were living like friends together used to bemoan our lot in our common talk; but I discussed it with Alypius and Nebridius more especially and in very familiar terms. Alypius had been born in the same town as I; his parents were of the highest rank there, but he was a bit younger than I. He had studied under me when I first taught in our town, and then afterward at Carthage. He esteemed me highly because I appeared to him good and learned, and I esteemed him for his inborn love of virtue, which was uncommonly marked in a man so young. ”

Portrait of Philip Schaff Philip Schaff,  Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers… (1885)

“ It so happened that I had a passage in hand, which while I was explaining, a simile borrowed from the Circensian games occurred to me, as likely to make what I wished to convey pleasanter and plainer, imbued with a biting jibe at those whom that madness had enthralled. Thou knowest, O our God, that I had no thought at that time of curing Alypius of that plague. ”

Julian,  Letters — Introduction

“ We know that Alypius was appointed by Julian in 362-3 to superintend the rebuilding of the Temple at Jerusalem (Ammianus 23. 1. 2) . The project failed, and Alypius returned to Antioch, where he is mentioned in a letter from Libanius to Basil (1583 Wolf) as a person of distinction. In 372, when the Emperor Valens, in his panic terror of assassination, was persecuting right and left, Alypius was exiled on a false charge of poisoning and his property confiscated (Ammianus 29. 1. 44) . ”
