“ I have five brothers, and I am the only girl in the family. Papa has taken Harper's Young People for us ever since it began. I want to tell you about our circulating library. There are three families of us. We all take magazines, and exchange. There were four families, but one went to Falls City to live. We take Harper's Monthly and Young People. ”

My uncle takes Harper's Weekly, and my aunt takes the Bazar, and I take Young People. I think it is one of the best papers published.
I have a pet chicken named Mary. She will walk a rope, and swing in a little swing I made for her.

“ I have three brothers—Johnnie, Watson, and Bertie. Johnnie and I go to school. I am learning to read and write. I tried to write this letter, but I thought you could not read it, so I got papa to write it for me. I like papa to read those letters that are in Young People for me, and some of the stories. I have no pets, but I have a cunning little brother Bertie, four months old; Johnnie is five years and Watson three years. We had lots of rain a week ago. It rained two days, and it flooded our basement, and the creek was very full.

“ My sister and I take Young People, and love it dearly. We always look for it on Thursday. We enjoy reading the letters in the Post-office Box. My sister is twelve, and I am nine years old. We have three brothers younger than ourselves. I saw a letter in one of our papers written by a little boy who signed his name Frankie Thomas, which is the very same name as that of our youngest brother. We have talked a great deal about it, and we wonder if he is as sweet and pretty as our dear little Frankie is.

“ It is a beautiful poem which came from the heart of a deep experience, and repeats the accent of the universal aspirations of humanity. It is with real satisfaction that one takes up the exquisite little volume just published by Roberts Brothers (Boston) , in which George R. Halm and William St. John Harper have combined their skill and gifts as illustrators and George T. Andrews his fine faculty of engraving. The frontispiece, 'Lead Thou me on,' is the best contribution which Mr. Harper makes to the joint work; the other illustrations from his hand are suggestive. Mr. ”

“ Against the walls were suspended garments fitted for all ages and conditions, and either sex. British and American uniforms hung side by side. Sitting on a stool, with his head leaning on his hand, was a man more athletic than either Harvey or her brother. He raised his face and Frances instantly recognised the composed features of Harper. She threw open the door of the hut and fell at his feet, crying, "Save him, save my brother; remember your promise!"
"Miss Wharton!" exclaimed Harper. "But you cannot be alone!" ”

“ The love, the truth and the beauty of Harper’s nature have nowhere found better expression than in his last letters to his closest friend. His heart is revealed there, as, only in such a relationship, it is possible for hearts to reveal themselves. “ Almost impatiently, he cried, "Why is it that you so set your affections on him whom you call by the name of Harold?"

"Oh, that is not enough! There are brothers and brothers; some are loved, and some—but let that pass. I want some better reason for your devotion to this Harold than the mere tie of blood, the mere accident of your having been born in the same dwelling."

“Agnes,” said Mr. Dainty, after musing for some moments, “Uncle John knew her mother.” ”

“ Here's a tin; every fellow who lets out a bad word shall pay half-a-crown into it, and we'll give it to the first hard-up chap we meet. That's agreed, is it, so long as this gentleman is with us?" "Aye, aye!" "Well, then, I'll take charge of the tin, and I'm d——d if I don't make you pay up." Shouts of laughter as he had to drop his half-crown into the tin. I don't fancy they recognized the Bishop even as a parson, for he was bespattered with mud from head to foot, as his horse "Dick" had rolled over with him in a swamp, his hat crushed out of shape, reduced to the colour of clay. ”

All true value lies in quality. You know the quality of Florence Harper. Honor the good, then. Be independent in your sphere of life. Set the noble example of being just. ”

To any one unaccustomed to serving in a shop the duties seem very perplexing. Left alone, Nora sat down behind the counter feeling decidedly confused by the novelty of her position. ”

"You better study up," said Aunt Nancy, coming to her senses, as Harper, very much confused, stopped the rattling. "You don't begin to realize what the guns and the fire-crackers and the torpedoes, and all the other dreadful things that blow up people and knock off boys' fingers and toes, are for. It would be a great deal better if boys had more history in their heads and less money in their pockets. ”

“ And unworthy of so holy a memory Harper never was. While spared to him, the love and affection of his father and mother were his greatest inspiration, and his great reward; taken from him, the remembrance of their example, and belief, in their continued life. Existence, constituted an abiding presence, helping him ever to nobler conduct and aim. ”

“ For would you side with a false brother against a true friend? A brother may not be a friend: but a friend will always be a brother—mind that, as your uncle Tony says!

This is the most endearing word that one human being can use to another. A fellow is certain to fight with his brothers and sisters, his father, and perhaps even his mother. ”

“ Not to give offence to a Brother is good in the sight of the Lord, and this Brother Primrose argued in a most Christian speech of four long hours or more, and which had the effect of convincing every one how necessary it was to free the tracts of everything offensive to your cherished institution.
