Portrait of Henryk Sienkiewicz Henryk Sienkiewicz,  The Knights of the Cross, or, Krzyzacy…

“ The short wintry day gradually drew toward evening, and the drawbridge was still up and the gate remained closed.
But toward evening a wind arose, dispersed the mist, cleared the sky and revealed the sunset glow.
The snow became dark-blue, and then violet. There was no frost, but the night promised to be fair. The walls were again deserted by all but the guard; the rooks and crows departed from the gallows to the forests. Finally the sky darkened and complete silence followed.
"They will not open the gate before nightfall," thought Jurand.

Jurgen and the law (1922)

“ The things of this world, the things as they are, are not to be loved, and he who made them, assuredly not the real God, finds love foreign to his breast.
[Pg 39]
Anyhow, this Koshchei, “monstrously pleased” with Jurgen’s defense of the devils against the Cistercian monk, puts himself in Jurgen’s way. Appearing to the hero in the shape of a small black gentleman, the earth spirit promises Jurgen a reward (10–11) .
What that reward is to be soon develops. Arriving home, Jurgen finds his wife has vanished. She has gone to a cave, of evil magic, across Amneran Heath.

Portrait of James Branch Cabell James Branch Cabell,  Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice

“ And I accept you, I yearn toward you, I who am daughter and somewhat more than daughter to the Sun. I who am all pleasure, all ruin, and a drunkenness of the inmost sense, desire you."
Now Jurgen held his lance erect before Anaïtis. "O secret of all things, hidden in the being of all which lives, now that the lance is exalted I do not dread thee: for thou art in me, and I am thou. I am the flame that burns in every beating heart and in the core of the farthest star. I too am life and the giver of life, and in me too is death.
