“ News was received by his family in London yesterday of the death at sea, at the age of 63, of Mr William Beatty Kingston, the journalist, and also well known as a writer of libretti and other musical works, Mr Kingston had for some time past suffered from diabetes, and he went a short sea voyage a fortnight ago hoping to recuperate. "How stupid they are!" cried poor Rachel to herself, almost stamping her foot with vexation. But there was no help for it. The affianced couple were once more left to themselves—as affianced [13] couples should be, and should like to be—in the pleasant firelight and no less pleasant twilight shadows that were filling the quiet room.
Mr. Kingston rose, took his reluctant sweetheart's hand, and led her back to the sofa by the hearth.

“ No sooner were the words uttered than a low groan was heard from one end of the schoolroom to the other. It rose higher and higher, till it burst into something which sounded very like a loud roar of anger.
“Mr Tugman, bring me up here some of the boys who are making that hideous noise,” shouted Mr Yates. “Monsieur Guillaume, can you catch some of them? Mr Moore, is no one making a noise near you?”
Whenever one of the masters approached, the boys were found crying, with their handkerchiefs to their eyes, and saying, “Oh dear! oh dear! we mustn’t go out; we mustn’t go out.”
