Portrait of John Lemprière John Lemprière,  A classical dictionary (1904)

“ Pannŏnia, a large country of Europe, bounded on the east by Upper Mœsia, south by Dalmatia, west by Noricum, and north by the Danube. It was divided by the ancients into Lower and Upper Pannonia. The inhabitants were of Celtic origin, and were first invaded by Julius Cæsar, and conquered in the reign of Tiberius. Philip and his son Alexander some ages before had successively conquered it. Sirmium was the ancient capital of all Pannonia, which contains the modern provinces of Croatia, Carniola, Sclavonia, Bosnia, Windisch, March, with part of Servia, and of the kingdoms of Hungary and Austria. ”

Sydney C. Grier,  A Crowned Queen: The Romance of a Minister of State

“ The Emperor of Pannonia shook his head. “Your advice is excellent, Count, but the understanding must not become known before the King is of age. It would appear that the influence of his family had been used to entrap him into an engagement before he was old enough to judge for himself. One must pay some heed to popular illusions, even in matters of state; and you know that in the Princess of Dardania we have to deal with an unscrupulous woman, who will seize with avidity on any opportunity that may offer itself for casting odium on the decision at which we have arrived.” ”
