Pemba

Definition and stakes

John C. Hutcheson,  The Penang Pirate

“ When they are all gathered they’re spread out in the sun and dried, and then sent off in bags to whoever wants ’em.”
“And where are they principally grown?” said I.
“Why, Pemba. That’s an island up above Zanzibar, about sixty miles from the coast, though they’re very good cloves grown on Zanzibar Island too; but Pemba is the chief place, and it is to there that the chief runs of slaves are made by the Arab dhows. That is why the London was so long stationed thereabouts: it was in order to intercept these craft and stop the traffic.”

active 15th century-16th century João de Sá,  A Journal of the First Voyage of Vasco da Gama 1497-1499

“ There can be no doubt as to this point, as these are the only mountains that approach the coast and form so marked an object from the sea when the air is clear. They are then visible from the town of Zanzibar.”
[112] This was Pemba, which, owing to its deep bays, appeared to consist of a number of islands. Its distance from the mainland is only 30 miles (9 leagues) , its length 37 miles. The trees of that island still supply masts for native vessels (Note by Sir J. Kirk) .
[113] Zavra or zabra, a dhow, which is a small open vessel, sharp at the stern, with a square sail of matting.

Henry Salt,  A voyage to Abyssinia — Chapter 3 (1814)

“ The inhabitants sell their things much cheaper. We got very fine bullocks, goats, poultry, rice, dholl, cocoa-nut oil, &c. Their fruits are very delicious, and they have all kinds." The provisions supplied to the fleet during its stay at Zanzebar amounted to about 2500 dollars. (Vide, for a more particular account, pages 35-6 and 7, of the same work.)
The Island of Pemba is low and about fourteen leagues long, and is represented to be still more fertile and woody than Zanzebar. Captain Fisher spoke in terms of rapture with respect to its aspect, climate, and resources.
