Uncle Richard

Definition and stakes

Horace Holley,  Read-Aloud Plays

“ Uncle Richard
Worse!
Richard
Yes. It wasn't that you grudged the money, it was that you simply didn't think of it. You felt that something had to be done, because I made you feel uncomfortable, but you didn't know exactly what, and you were both relieved to see me go. I had spoiled your Thanksgiving dinner—that was the depth of your realization.
Uncle Richard
No, no, Richard! You were so cold, so silent. You made it impossible for us to help you.
Richard
I suppose I did seem cold. That's the instinct of inexperienced natures when they are desperate.

Portrait of Richard Brinsley Sheridan Richard Brinsley Sheridan,  The School for Scandal

“ SIR OLIVER. [Aside.] Heaven deliver me! his famous uncle Richard for ten pounds!— [Aloud.] Very well, sir, I take him at that.
CHARLES. Careless, knock down my uncle Richard.—Here, now, is a maiden sister of his, my great-aunt Deborah, done by Kneller, in his best manner, and esteemed a very formidable likeness. There she is, you see, a shepherdess feeding her flock. You shall have her for five pounds ten—the sheep are worth the money.
SIR OLIVER. [Aside.] Ah! poor Deborah! a woman who set such a value on herself!— [Aloud.] Five pounds ten—she's mine.
CHARLES. Knock down my aunt Deborah!

Portrait of David Grayson David Grayson,  Adventures in Friendship

“ He is no longer known as hardworking, or able, or grasping, or rich, or wicked: he is just Old. Everything seems to have been stripped away from Uncle Richard except age.
How well I remember the first time Uncle Richard Summers impressed himself upon my mind. It was after the funeral of his old wife, now several years ago. I saw him standing at the open grave with his broad-brimmed felt hat held at his breast. His head was bowed and his thin, soft, white hair stirred in the warm breeze. I wondered at his quietude.
