Ankle joint

Definition and stakes

The Home Medical Library, Volume 1…

“ A fracture of the ankle joint is really a fracture of the lower extremities of the bones of the leg. There are present pain and great swelling, particularly on the inner side of the ankle at first, and the whole foot is pushed and bent outward. The bony prominence on the inner side of the ankle is unduly marked. The foot besides being bent outward is also displaced backward on the leg. This fracture might be taken for a dislocation or sprain of the ankle. ”

“ Boots which button up the legs are not so liable as shoes to weaken the ankles, because they protect the latter, but with high-heeled shoes the ankle is left bare, and consequently every time that you twist your foot, you wrench the ankle-joint. We have seen serious disease of the ankle following repeated wrenching or spraining from wearing high-heeled shoes. The higher and narrower the heels are, the more liable are they to do harm. ”

“ Since it often happens that the bone entering into the joint is broken, it follows that whenever what appears to be a severe sprain occurs, with inability to move the joint and great swelling, it is important to secure surgical aid promptly. Since the discovery of the X-ray many injuries of the smaller bones of the wrist and ankle joint, formerly diagnosed as sprains by the most skillful surgeons, have, by its use, been discovered to be breaks of the bones which were impossible of detection by the older methods of examination. ”
