Portrait of Albert J. Beveridge Albert J. Beveridge,  The Life of John Marshall, Volume 1…

“ For almost a year, an Anti-Constitutionalist paper in Philadelphia kept up the bombardment of the Constitution and its advocates, its gunner being a writer signing himself "Centinel." [1030] His ammunition was a mixture of argument, statement, charge, and abuse, wrapped up in cartridge paper of blistering rhetoric. The Constitution was, wrote "Centinel," a "spurious brat"; "the evil genius of darkness presided at its birth" and "it came forth under the veil of mystery." ”

“ RUSSELL'S DEVICES TO ATTRACT ATTENTION In spite of this rather pretentious announcement for a paper, The Centinel increased in circulation, not because of the amount or the quality of its news, but because its publisher was the first to realize the value of dramatized and illustrated features for his subscribers. He was extremely fertile in devices and never hesitated to use pictures or mechanical arrangement in types
to attract the attention of readers.

Abstract of the evidence for the abolition of the slave-trade… (1791)

“ The boatswain said he would jump overboard; upon which he was tied to the rail of the quarter-deck, and a pump-bolt put into his mouth by way of gagging him. He was then untied, put under the half-deck, and a centinel put over him all night—in the morning he was released. Mr. Falconbridge always considered him as a quiet, inoffensive man. ”
