Chilblains

Definition and stakes

Various,  The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. XX, No…

“ As chilblains are a kind of minor frostbite, keeping warm will necessarily prevent them, but it is very difficult for a person with feeble circulation to keep warm.
If you have a chilblain coming do not scratch it, for this makes it far worse. Bathe the part gently in warm spirit and water, and wrap the finger or toe, whichever it is, in a thick layer of cotton wool. If you do this you will probably prevent the chilblains from bursting.

John H. Young,  Our Deportment

“ Frequent bathing of the feet in a strong solution of alum is useful in preventing the coming of chilblains. On the first indication of any redness of the toes and sensation of itching it would be well to rub them carefully with warm spirits of rosemary, to which a little turpentine has been added. Then a piece of lint soaked in camphorated spirits, opodeldoc or camphor liniment may be applied and retained on the part. Should the chilblain break, dress it twice daily with a plaster of equal parts of lard and beeswax, with half the quantity in weight of oil of turpentine. ”

Arnold James Cooley,  Cooley's Cyclopædia of Practical Receipts and Collateral Information in the Arts…

“ The common symptoms are itching and irritation, more or less intense, often accompanied with shooting pains, and tenderness, and tumefaction of the parts. Children, especially those of a scrofulous habit, and elderly persons, are generally the most liable to chilblains. The common cause of chilblains is holding the hands or feet to the fire after exposure to cold. The sudden change of temperature partially destroys the vitality of the minute surfacial vessels, and thus prevents the proper flow of blood through the part. ”
