Double crochet

Definition and stakes

Marie Jane Cooper,  The New Guide to Knitting & Crochet

“ This is done in the plain double crochet, also in plain double Berlin wool. Cast on sixty [50] loops, and choose a pretty crochet pattern for the border on each side—say a narrow border of green leaves, perhaps ten or twelve stitches wide, on a scarlet ground, the centre a black ground, with a diamond arabesque pattern, in bright golds, scarlets, greens, and blues; to be about half-a-yard wide altogether, with the border on the other side; you can vary the other part of the bag at pleasure. They are made up with patent leather sides and bottom, with steel at the top. ”

Anne Knox Arthur,  An embroidery book (1920)

“ It is worked in three rows—a linen thread gives the best effect. To work the first row, begin with one double stitch into a button-hole loop, then two chain, and one double crochet into every second button-hole loop; on approaching the corners, work into every loop so as to allow the next row to lie easily round them—nothing spoils good work so much as to see the stitching tightened and strained round the edges and corners. ”
