Slipper

“ When the curtain went down on the finale, I saw our aviator chap spring to his feet and plow up the aisle. He was in such a hurry that he was downright rude. Soon his beautiful hawky profile vanished, and I came back to earth.
I say, what a rummy old top it is! Fancy me stumbling upon that slipper! A little white slipper, no bigger than my hand, light as thistledown—a proud and patriotic little slipper. But did I stumble on it? I rather fancy was positively led to it. Fact! I say, how the deuce do you roll those rotten “makings,” as you Yankees call 'em? ”

“ Nothing fascinates a man like a woman's slipper, from its utter incomprehensibility, its astonishing unlikeness to any article subserving the same purpose for his own sex. Eva's slippers always seemed to have a character of their own,—a prankish elfin grace, and these as they stood there seemed instinct with life as two white kittens just ready for a spring.

“ Pair of Old Slippers
After the last cat has disappeared, bring out the slippers; any kind except toy ones will do. Place the slippers on a sheet of white paper laid on the top of a table where all present may see.

Explain to the girls and boys that they must take one turn each in trying their fortunes by putting one slipper crosswise on top of the other, both right side up (Fig. 49) , and while holding them so, repeat the following verse:
These slippers I toss into the air. ”

“ Then both the sisters were overjoyed to hear this; for they had beautiful feet, and had no doubt that they could wear the golden slipper. We turned into a side-street and went off in a westerly direction. By and by I saw the River. We stopped before a fine Mansion with a grille at the side and a bit of lawn. I understood. ”

“ And when the women were all assembled, noble and ignoble, rich and poor, old and young, beautiful and ugly, and when all was ready, the king tried the slipper first on one and then on another of the guests, to see whom it should fit to a hair, and to be able thus to discover by the form of the slipper the maiden of whom he was in search ”

“ Coloured engravings of slipper patterns are for sale in all the worsted and trimming stores. In making your selections, it is best to avoid those patterns that have white in them; as the white crewel will look soiled very soon, and give a dirty appearance to the whole slipper. ”

For a moderate-sized gentleman’s slipper in crochet silk, the toe might be commenced with twenty-four stitches, and increased in the succeeding rows, until the width across the instep were eighty stitches,—but, as some persons work so much tighter than others, a positive number cannot be given. The following directions are for slipper size 3. Ch 11 sts. Make 11 s c in slipper stitch, described in doll's hug-me-tight (Figure 246) widen in the centre by making 3 s c in 1 ch. Make two rows like last widening in centre, then a row without widening. When the work reaches from the toe to the hollow part of the sole (about 12 ribs) the front is long enough. [326] (Alternate two rows one colour and two in the other.) Turn and work 15 s c. Continue in the slipper stitch until the work will reach around the sole by stretching. ”
