Electric dynamo

Definition and stakes

Adam Gowens Whyte,  Electricity in Locomotion

“ Before going on to discuss the 'accumulator' or 'storage battery' system of electric traction, reference should be made to an invention which holds the germ of great economies in electric traction. This invention is known under the name of 'regenerative control.'
It has already been explained that the dynamo is reversible—that is to say, a dynamo may act as a motor, or a motor as a dynamo. This fact is usefully applied in braking tramcars. When a car has gained speed, its momentum represents a certain amount of stored energy.

H. T. Cory,  The Thompson-Houston System of Electric Lighting

“ The Thomson-Houston Dynamo. In considering the current generator the first thing to be decided upon is the definition of the term dynamo. The following is thought to be a correct definition,—A dynamo or dynamo electric machine is a machine which is used to convert energy in the form of mechanical motion into energy of electric currents, or vica-versa. Those used to generate currents of electricity are called dynamos, those used to generate mechanical motion are known as motors. ”

The Progress of the Century

“ A current was noted as present in the circuit so long as the disk was turned. Here, then, was the embryo dynamo. The century closed with single dynamo machines of over 5000 horse-power capacity, and with single power stations in which the total electric generation by such machines is 75,000 to 100,000 horse-power.273 So perfect is the modern dynamo that out of 1000 horse-power expended in driving it, 950 or more may be delivered to the electric line as electric energy. The electric motor, now so common, is a machine like the dynamo, in which the principle of action is simply reversed ”
