Portrait of Auguste Forel Auguste Forel,  The sexual question

“ Secretions, urine and semen accumulate and decompose in a phimosed prepuce, cause irritation and lead to masturbation. All cases of phimosis should be operated upon in infancy, by complete or partial circumcision.
In women, the number of diseases which prevent conception is much greater than in man. The ovary may undergo cystic degeneration or become the seat of a tumor; but affections of the uterus and vagina cause more sterility than ovarian affections. This results chiefly from catarrh and inflammation which destroy the spermatozoa before they can reach the egg during its descent.

Frank E. Beddard,  The Cambridge natural history, Vol… (1901)

“ The spermatozoa do not attain maturity until they reach the uterus of the female.
The internal female reproductive organs are, with few exceptions (Trichina, etc.) , double, but the vagina, which is lined with cuticle continuous with that covering the body, is always single. They are usually much coiled, and may be divided into ovary, oviduct, and uterus. The ova arise from a polynucleated mass of protoplasm or syncytium (Fig. 65, o) at the upper end, and acquire distinctness as they approach the oviduct.
