Vesicle

“ The first symptoms indicative of the approaching efflux of blood occur on the Thursday, generally about noon. On each of the pink surfaces already described on the hands and feet, a vesicle is seen to commence, and to rise little by little. When completely developed, it is a rounded hemispherical prominence on the surface of the skin; its base is the same size as the pink surface on which it rests—that is, nearly an inch long, by a little more than half an inch broad. This vesicle is formed by the epidermis detached from the dermis, and elevated as a half sphere by serous liquid within. ”

“ No doubt they alone do not supply a sufficient basis for any firm conclusions as to the fate of the germinal vesicle. Still, if they cannot sustain, they unquestionably support certain views. The natural interpretation of them is that the membrane of the germinal vesicle is in the act of commencing to atrophy, preparatory to being extruded from the egg, while the contents of the germinal vesicle are about to be absorbed. ”

“ Granules are sometimes also present in the germinal vesicle, but are probably only extremely minute nucleoli.
In ova of 0.5 mm. the germinal vesicle has a diameter of 0.12 mm. (Pl. 25, fig. 21) . It is usually shrunk in hardened specimens though nearly spherical in the living ovum. Its contents are rendered granular by reagents though quite clear when fresh, and the reticulum of the earlier stages is sometimes with difficulty to be made out, though in other instances fairly clear. In all cases the fibres composing it are very granular. The membrane [Pg 584] is thick. ”

“ If you turn to the production of the chick in ovo, however, you will find at first no more than a vesicle or auricle, or pulsating drop of blood; it is only by and by, when the development has made some progress, that the heart is fashioned: even so in certain animals not Destined to attain to the highest perfection in their organization, such as bees, wasps, snails, shrimps, crayfish, &c., we only find a certain pulsating vesicle, like a sort of red or white palpitating point, as the beginning or principle of their life. ”

“ The epithelium may separate from the stratum basale, leaving a red lesion with shreds of torn epithelium. Vesicular fluid may leak through the stratum corneum without the formation of a true vesicle (Seibold and Sharp 1960) . Since vesicles are most often seen at the site of mechanical stress, they usually rupture quickly, leaving a red erosion. Often, lesions are contaminated with dirt and debris (Fig. 25.2) , resulting in infection with opportunistic bacteria. ”

“ The blastodermic vesicle has at first the usual spherical form, but it grows out at an early period, and with prodigious rapidity, into two immensely long horns; which in cases where there is only one embryo are eventually prolonged for the whole length of the two horns of the uterus. The embryonic area is formed in the usual way, and its long axis is placed at right angles to that of the vesicle. On the formation of an amnion there [Pg 251] is formed the usual subzonal membrane, which soon becomes separated by a considerable space from the yolk-sack (fig. 153) . ”

“ A vesicle is first produced, and then a contraction appears around the vesicle, and this contraction increases till a portion of the vesicle is cut off and swims away free like an amœba. The same phenomenon may be observed with vermiform growths, a single seed often giving {141}rise in this way to a whole series of amœbiform or vermiform productions.
It must be remembered that in an osmotic growth the active growing portion is the gelatinous contents in the interior, the external visible growth being only a skeleton or shell. ”

“ At the same time the ectoderm covering the side of the head thickens and becomes invaginated to form the lens vesicle (see figs. 4 and 5, δ) , which later loses its connexion with the surface and approaches the optic vesicle, causing that structure to become cupped for its reception, so that what was the optic vesicle becomes the optic cup and consists of an external and an internal layer of cells (fig. 6 β and δ) . Of these the outer cells become the retinal pigment, while the inner form the other layers of the retina. ”

“ All three operations were successful, and on the eighth day all three vesicles were matured “like a pearl upon a rose petal,” as Jenner described a perfect specimen. On that day, the eighth day after the operation, I visited my patient, and to all appearance she was in the soundest health and spirits, with her usual bright eyes and ruddy cheeks. Although I was much tempted to take the lymph from so healthy a vesicle and subject, I did not do so, as I have frequently seen erysipelas and other had consequences follow the opening of a matured vesicle. ”

“ Normal Clinical Course.—After primary vaccination in man there is a stage of incubation lasting for from forty-eight to seventy-two hours; a papule then develops, and by the end of the third or fourth day this has begun to show umbilication and a vesicular structure. When fully developed, about the sixth day after vaccination, the vesicle is distended and pearly in color. On the seventh or eighth day the areola develops,—i.e., the skin about the vesicle becomes hard, sensitive, and red, the redness extending a variable distance, not usually more than two inches from the edge of the vesicle. ”

“ The external membrane of the body is turned inwards at the orifice, as a short flattened tube, which widens considerably (being, in a middle-sized specimen of Coronula, 4/100ths of an inch in width) before it abruptly terminates. The meatus, as I have called the sack-like cavity which encloses the true acoustic sack or vesicle, is formed of pulpy membrane, and is apparently continuous with the corium of the whole body, but by dissection it can be separated entire. The acoustic vesicle is of various shapes, as we shall immediately see ”

“ A vesicle is seen to protrude near the anal end of the intestine, which, rapidly expanding, spreads over the embryo, acquiring a close adhesion to the amnion, but remaining distinct from the vitellicle, over which it spreads. ”

“ He found in the impregnated, but not yet segmented, germinal disc a cavity which, as he suggests, might well have been occupied by the germinal vesicle. It is not unreasonable to suppose that the membrane, being composed of formed matter and able only to take a passive share in vital functions, could, without thereby influencing the constitution of the ovum, be ejected. ”

“ All molluscs, when frightened, discharge such a juice, but the discharge is most copious in the cuttle-fish. The mytis, then, is situated under the mouth, and the oesophagus runs through it; and down below at the point to which the gut extends is the vesicle of the black juice, and the animal has the vesicle and the gut enveloped in one and the same membrane, and by the same membrane, same orifice discharges both the black juice and the residuum. The animals have also certain hair-like or furry growths in their bodies. ”

“ The ovum of Amphioxus contains very little food material and its segmentation is quite uniform. The result of segmentation is a vesicle whose wall is formed of a single layer of cells. These are all of the same character, and the cavity of the vesicle called the segmentation cavity is of considerable size. A section of the embryo, as we may now call the ovum, is represented in Plate 5, fig. ”

“ The epidermis is raised at points by a viscid, yellowish lymph, enclosed in a series of saccules (multilocular vesicle) . The vesicle encreases to 8 or 10 lines in diameter by the eighth or tenth day, and exceptionally, the umbilication is effaced by the excessive production of lymph. If left unbroken a brownish shade appears in the centre and gradually extends toward the periphery, the contents becoming purulent, and the pustule gradually drying up to form a crust. ”

Every ovum as it approaches maturity is found to be composed (Fig. 1) of (1) a protoplasmic body or vitellus usually containing yolk-spherules in suspension; (2) of a germinal vesicle or nucleus, [Pg 522] containing (3) one or more germinal spots or nucleoli. It is with the germinal vesicle and its contents that we are especially concerned. This body at its full development has a more or less spherical shape, and is enveloped by a distinct membrane. ”

“ The vesicle is always somewhat larger than the scarification, and the larger the vesicle the greater danger that the surface may be broken, and the more opportunity there is for the introduction of extraneous infection. ”

“ The ovum, enclosed by the zona radiata, passes into the Fallopian tube and undergoes a segmentation which has not been studied with great detail. On the close of segmentation, about six days after impregnation, it assumes (Hensen) a vesicular form not unlike that of other Mammalia. To the inner side of one wall of this vesicle is attached a mass of granular cells similar to the hypoblastic mass in the blastodermic vesicle of the rabbit. The egg still lies freely in the uterus, and is invested by its zona radiata. ”

“ The fluid continues to increase in amount until the papule is converted into a little blister or vesicle. As the change is going on, the height of the papule grows less and less, and when vesiculation is complete we have a broad, flat, umbilicated vesicle with a firm, dense base. ”

The original single vesicle of the brain becomes divided by the time the larva is hatched into two sections (fig. 9) — (1) an anterior vesicle with, for the most part, thin walls, in which [Pg 16] unpaired auditory and optic organs make their appearance, and (2) a posterior nearly solid cephalic ganglion, through which there passes a narrow continuation of the central canal of the nervous system. This ganglion consists of a dorsal section formed of distinct cells, and a ventral section formed of a punctated material with nuclei. ”

“ It is a very common object, and possesses a red eye-speck close to the “contractile vesicle.” All Infusoria have the latter, some a great number, as in Fig. 9. The vesicle contracts at regular intervals, and is then simply blotted out, but reforms in the same place, so that it is probably the heart or the urinary bladder of these minute animals.
The lovely rosette shown in Fig. 4 is the Synura, a spherical colony of zoöids, each of which has two flagella, and is in addition clothed with rows of cilia. A beautiful sight it is to watch these colonies rolling through the field of view. ”

“ The nucleated vesicle, the fundamental form of all organization, we must regard as the meeting-point between the inorganic and the organic—the end of the mineral and beginning of the vegetable and animal kingdoms, which thence start in different directions, but in perfect parallelism and analogy. ”

“ Usually they become so displaced that the left one lies in front of the right, and they appear as if median. The subsequent fate of the vesicles differs greatly in different Craniates. Both persist in the Lamprey, the right vesicle to some extent retaining its primitive visual function as a parietal eye and directly overlying the left or pineal vesicle. In Elasmobranchs the two unite to form a glandular organ, the so-called pineal body of the adult, and in Teleosts the left vesicle disappears, leaving the right as a pineal body. ”

“ Gradually the vesicle becomes larger and of firmer consistence, and now the whole of the wall, except where the cytoblast forms part of it, consists of a jelly. By-and-bye the cell grows beyond the edge of the cytoblast and rapidly becomes so large that the latter appears only as a small body inclosed in one of the side walls. ”

“ When an animal wishes to protrude and extend any given sucker, it contracts the vesicle at its base by an effort of the will; the fluid is thus forced into the tubular stem which is therefore compelled to elongate, and on the removal of this contractile force, the fluid returns to the bladder, either by the elasticity of the tube, or probably by its muscular action, and the sucker is gradually withdrawn. ”

“ There are two sacral or pelvic vesicles which are situated at the angle between the tail and the thigh in the posterior part of the abdominal cavity. Each vesicle is a trifle more than a half inch long and a quarter inch wide, and is shaped somewhat like a kidney bean. They have muscular coats with striated fibers. These sacs are called “lymph hearts.”
The anterior division of the femoral lymphatic trunk accompanies the aorta, on which it forms a plexus with the branches of the opposite side, and with the intestinal lymph vessels. ”

“ The vesicle may be much larger and the area of inflammation much more dense and angry. The fever may be higher and may last longer; there may be a general rash and the degree of depression more profound. Vesicles may be produced on other parts of the body as a result of scratching. ”
