“ Another later rival in the same field is the British Medical Journal, the official organ of the British Medical Association, a body founded as far back as 1832 under the name of the Provincial and Surgical Association by Sir Charles Hastings. In 1856 the Association took its present title and issued its journal as a regular medical organ. The connection with its parent organization lends considerable weight to its opinions and adds to its technical excellence but may to some extent limit its independence in discussing questions affecting merely the interests of the profession. ”

“ During his professional career he was a frequent contributor of papers to medical societies and journals. He was for ten years an associate editor of the American Journal of Insanity and wrote extensively for its columns, his articles on "Phosphoric Acid" and "Chloral" being frequently quoted by medical journals and by writers on materia medica and practice. ”

“ For several years he was correspondent for the New Jersey Medical and Surgical Reporter, the New York Medical Times, the Nashville Medical Journal, the New Orleans Medical Journal, and others. He also co-edited the Medical and Surgical Reporter with Dr. S. W. Butler in 1858, but in another year Atkinson became obstetric editor for S. D. Gross, of the North American Medico-Chirurgical Review, but the war caused its discontinuation. These duties gave him training in the art of writing to bear fruit in his book of biographies. ”

“ His name, too, is associated with a method of treating popliteal aneurism, which he was the first to use in Great Britain. His real life-work, however, was as a medical journalist, beginning with the Lancet in 1857. He was appointed editor of the British Medical Journal in 1866. ”

He was also examiner and clinical lecturer in children's diseases in the Queen's University of Belfast, and he contributed several articles to the British Medical Journal and other professional journals. ”

The science of medicine, in all its departments, is in a very changeable state. The discoveries, which are made from time to time in anatomy, physiology, and pathology, the theories which are put forth, and the new remedies, and modes of treatment which are continually proposed, keep up a constant excitement in the profession. ”

“ After four years (1824) he took as his associates William P. Dewees and John L. Godman and the journal has run a successful career right up to the present time (American Journal of the Medical Sciences) . ”

“ In 1865 he became editor of the United States Medical and Surgical Journal and the next year published the Homoeopathic Guide. In 1871 he established a home for foundlings that had a successful career without state or municipal aid. ”

His interest in the development of mathematical research did not interfere with his devotion to philosophy and the classics, and he probably had few equals in his knowledge of cellular pathology. He was an inspiring teacher; his laboratory was a rallying point for medical students and newly qualified physicians in search of advice and guidance. ”

“ In the United States, as in other civilized countries, this topic was greatly emphasized in the curriculum of almost every school teaching the health professions. Today, the subject matter contained in this branch of science is taught under the heading of several specialized fields, such as pharmacology, pharmacognosy, and drug analysis of various types. However, when the decision was made in 1881 to promote greater knowledge and interest in the healing arts by creating a section devoted to such pursuits in the U.S. National Museum, the title of Section of Materia Medica was adopted. ”

“ Alexander Charles O'Sullivan, Professor of Pathology in the University of Dublin and Senior Fellow of Trinity College, at his residence, Ailesbury Road, Dublin, after an illness of only a few days. He was born in the county of Cork about sixty-six years ago, the son of the Rev. Denis O'Sullivan, Rector of Macroom. From Tipperary Grammar School he went to Trinity College, Dublin, and having studied classics in his freshman years he suddenly turned to mathematics, and obtained a scholarship in that subject in 1879. ”

“ Is widely known in America and Europe, having been before the reading world fifty years, and occupying a place in literature exclusively its own, viz., the study of Human Nature in all its phases, including Phrenology, Physiognomy, Ethnology, Physiology, etc., together with the “Science of Health,” and no expense will be spared to make it the best publication for general circulation, tending always to make men better physically, mentally, and morally. Parents and teachers should read the Journal, that they may better know how to govern and train their children. ”

“ When she finally settled in England she continued to co-operate in the movement which has since led to the frank recognition of the medical profession as a proper sphere for women, and to the establishment, as we recently pointed out, of as many as 476 registered medical women in practice in England alone. ”
