Various,  Popular Science Monthly (1906)

“ With the knowledge of these other pathogenic protozoa and of their modes of life investigation will bring out the means of combating them and thus of reducing human suffering, and this prospect if for no other reason, is a full justification of the many commissions that have been appointed, and of the vast sums of money that have been spent, to further protozoan research. ”

Various,  The Monist, Vol. 1, 1890-1891

“ Whereas the protozoan is represented by a single cell that comprehends all the vital functions, the functions of reproduction as well as those of nutrition and relation, the metazoan, on the other hand, is composed of an aggregation, of a colony of distinct cells, among which a division of labor has been effected varying in complexity with the height that the animal has attained in the classificatory scale. ”

John M. Tyler,  The Whence and the Whither of Man

“ We might almost claim that if the evolution of man from the single cell be granted, no other order of their occurrence is possible.
The protozoa are mostly, though not purely, nutritive and reproductive. These functions are essential to the existence of the species. Naturally in the early protozoan colonies, and in forms like hydra, these functions predominated. But mere digestive tissue is not enough for digestion. Muscles are needed to draw the [110] food to the mouth, to keep the digestive sack in contact with it, and for other purposes.
