James Wharton,  The Bounty of the Chesapeake: Fishing in Colonial Virginia

“ I never heard of rockfish above the falls, and supposed they were confined to Tidewater.... Rockfish were hunted on the Eastern Shore on horseback with spears. The large fish coming to feed on the creek shores, overflowed by the tide, showed themselves in the shallow water by a ripple before them. They were ridden on behind and forced into water too shallow for them to swim well, and were speared. I inferred from this fact that they confined themselves to the Tidewater. When young, I have heard the old people speak of an abundance of other fish. ”

Portrait of Jules Verne Jules Verne,  Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea

Amongst the specimens of these branches I noticed some placenae, with thin unequal shells, a kind of ostracion peculiar to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean; some orange lucinae with rounded shells; rockfish three feet and a half long, which raised themselves under the waves like hands ready to seize one. ”

In the center of competition no species can afford to be handicapped by a weak back-bone and redundant vertebræ. Those who are thus weighted cannot hold their own. They must change or perish.
The conditions most favorable to fish life are among the rocks [Pg 215] and reefs of the tropical seas. About the coral reefs is the center of fish competition. A coral archipelago is the Paris of fishes.
