Stock ticker

Definition and stakes

Henry Howard Harper,  The psychology of speculation (1926)

“ And thousands daily are influenced by the stock ticker to commit the most fatuous blunders.
As a camera fails to record a true picture if placed in too close juxtaposition to the object, so in studying the ticker-tape one is restricted to a close-up view of conditions, resulting in a distorted gauge of values; for the figures recorded often mislead and confuse the attentive observer; in fact it frequently happens that the price fluctuations result from a wave of hysteria among a coterie of traders, and bear but little analogy to the true value of the stocks.

Thomas William Lawson,  Frenzied Finance, Vol. 1: The Crime of Amalgamated

“ On earth there is no more pitiable sight than the panic of a herd of novice stock-speculators suddenly awakened to a realization of their ruin. The ticker clicks a sort of death-watch as the merciless tape, without hitch or let up, reels off destruction. To such desperate beings the stock operator—the market-maker—is the straw to save them from drowning, and to him they turn as the one possible source of aid and hope. ”

Portrait of Edwin Lefevre Edwin Lefevre,  Wall Street stories

“ The air was almost unbreathable for the innumerable “tips” to buy or sell securities and insecurities of all kinds. The brokers, the customers, the clerks, the Exchange door-keepers, all Wall Street read the morning papers, not to ascertain the news, but to pick such items as would, should, or might, have some effect on stock values. There was no god but the ticker, and the brokers were its prophets! ”
